Chavez vs. Steave Wiki

Chaves and Steave entered the cage for a battle between undefeated featherweights.


Chaves came out more aggressive but missed on his first few strikes. Chaves landed a leg kick. Chaves landed a jab but missed the cross. Chaves shot in for a takedown but Steave repelled him with a front headlock. Steave pressed forward with a few glancing kicks of his own. Both fighters were reluctant to engage in a fire fight, as they continued to test the range with single strikes. Chaves landed a nice body kick and Steave responded with one of his own that Chaves caught and used to take him down. Steave controlled his opponent's posture from his closed guard as Chaves looked to get his arms free. Steave rolled to his knees and Chaves wound up on his back after trying too hastily to take his opponent's back. Steave rode out the remaining seconds of the round in Chaves's guard.


Steave landed a leg kick early into the second round, but both fighters remained cautious. Steave landed a nice jab. Steave attacked with a body kick and a flurry but Chaves caught him with a nice left hook as he disengaged. Chaves came up short on several punches as both fighters looked to counter without committing to their offense. Steave landed a pair of straight jabs. Chaves landed a glancing overhand right. Steave continued to chase Chaves around the cage, cutting angles, then tried for a takedown that was unsuccessful. Steave blocked a head kick. Steave landed a right cross at the end of the round.


Steave came out with a flurry, looking aggressive as he backed Chaves up. Chaves shot in for a takedown but Steave defended. Chaves knocked Steave off his feet with a nice leg kick and Steave popped back up. Chaves landed a leg kick on an oncoming Steave but continued to fight defensively. Chaves lost his balance on a decal that ripped up off the mat, causing a momentary halt to the action as the ref removed the debris. Steave continued to come in more aggressive, but Chaves blocked or avoided most of his strikes. Chaves landed a leg kick. Steave missed a sloppy spinning hook then landed a nice right cross and a leaping body kick. Chaves landed a push kick to the body. Steave landed a left hook and a right straight. Steave backed Chaves into the cage and ripped him to the body with punches before the bell rang.


The official scorecards read 29-28 across the board for Chaves, giving him a somewhat controversial decision.
