for some reason with his height and build I feel that he could easily fight at LHW.  It may take him 4-6 months to get down there but it is feasible.  I just think his height is going to be a hinderance as he goes up against the better Heavyweights.  He is an explosive athlete at Heavywieght and I think the move down would really benefit him a lot.

Bill Burgess, I don't think your in any position to say "it's one of the stupidest ideas I've seen here".

Because most of the stupidest ideas " I " have seen here, have come from you.

I don't see why its a dumb idea for Barry to move down. Is he ever going to vie for a title at HW? No. Would he ever fight for a title at LHW? No. He's not that caliber of fighter. And yes, while he was smashing Kongo, he didn't win, he got knocked out. Since his striking is so technical, I don't see why he couldn't use it at LHW. You don't think that if Pat dropped about 30-40 lbs he wouldn't gain a little quickness? It's not what he needs to do, but to say that it is a "terrible" idea, is a little frivolous. To answer the main question of the thread, yes he could make LHW.

Also, I will never understand some MMA fans. If guys are stocky/small in a division everyone screams to move up. If they arent tall/stocky in a division everyone screams to move down. If Barry was a LHW struggling to make weight everyone would be saying 'why doesnt he just fight at heavyweight' LOL. Its hilarious

since Barry probably walks around at the 240-250 mark, he would only have to go down to a walking weight of 220-225 in order to compete at LHW.  that leaves him with a cut of 15-20 lbs for his fights at that weight.  I mean Anderson walks around at 220 and fights 185.

And to those saying he is quick at HW, well when you get lighter you don't lose speed you increase it. he would sacrifice some power, but he would still be stronger than most LHWs.

I posed this question originally not because of an issue with talent I just think Barry is fighting in the wrong weight class, I am not a proponent of guys moving weight classes because they are not winning and cutting weight is more justifiable than improving your skills.  but at 5-11 240, I have a hard time ever seeing Barry as a Top 10 HW.  I am not saying that he can be a Top 10 LHW, but I think that if he cut the weight his gas tank would improve and you would not see these blast outta the gates fights only to fizzle out and get put away.  If he can sustain his attacks for longer periods without gassing he would have a lot more success and a maybe a move down would help him with that.

@ One Hit  I attacked an opinion of Pat Barry cutting 40 lbs. of muscle.  You attacked ME.

Seems to me you broke the site rule.  It's fine to criticize an opinion.  You criticized me.

And oh, by the way.  I deliberately used to bring up controversial topics to stimulate legitimate discussion.  To assist Gregory and Jeremy to build the site.  I did what I did not only because I sincerely believe in certain opinions, but to Build Us Up.  It's called strategy.

And since when are minority opinions bad?  I invite discussion, but only respectful discussion as when friends spar.  For Pat Barry to cut 40 lbs. of muscle to fight smaller guys is as extreme as ANYTHING I ever advocated.

Keep it positive.  See?  I avoided insulting you, so let's see if you can do the same.  And saying you're only telling the truth and being honest is no excuse to go negative or being an ignorant *******.  Calling me stupid is NOT calling one of my opinions stupid.  You cannot tell the difference.

When someone gets personal, that is the red flag that they ran out of argument in defense of their position.  They are surrendering, running up the White Flag, and admitting they lost the argument.

Get off the high horse Bill.  On page 1:

To suggest he drop to LHW is just so ridiculous.  Frankly, it's one of the stupidest ideas I've seen here.

Them is fightin' words.  You started it, so you shouldn't be surprised One Hit came back at you.  Anyway, moving on...

Pat Barry weighed in at 242 lbs. to fight the other day.  It is reasonable to assume he tried to lose some weight to come in at 242.

For him to fight at LHW, he will have to weigh in at no more than 206 on weigh-in day.  That is around 36 lbs.  He is already pretty hard and lean.  To drop all that weight will weaken him to levels that no one can predict.

Frankly, I just don't think he can do it.  I would doubt if Roy Nelson could do it and Roy has a lot more fat.  Discipline applied in service of the wrong direction can lead to no good result.

I think Pat Barry enjoys Bagel Bites to much to give them up and drop to 205.

he is giving up 5-7 inches in height against most HWs.  and people make is sound like Barry is some shredded guy at 242.  the dude has weight to lose.

I still think he only needs to cut his weight to 220-225 in order to fight at LHW, because the last 14-19 lbs would be done like a normal cut.

If a man fails to find success at their natural weight, and considers dropping an extreme amount of weight to fight smaller fighters, that is not ennobling.  The concept of weight divisions is to stop that very thing.  People should fight others their own size.  That is an admission of failure and looking for untoward advantages.

How much better to train at the skills that hamstring you and round off your fight game.  Barry needs to train at ju-jitsu, wrestling and defense.  Changing divisions is a bad idea for him and if he is smart, he will ignore such terrible advice and concentrate on bringing his weak areas up to his strong areas.
