Are politically tinted jokes also not allowed? Because I have been guilty of that. I mentioned that too but I don't know what the "correct" way of joking in English is, so it often looks a bit clumsy but I'll do my best.

You're not wrong.. you certainly have the images of some elfstedentocht on your retina when you think of the Netherlands. This is/was a skating competition on natural ice along 11 cities (province of Friesland) it is no longer held because the ice is not thick enough in the last +-25 years.
