Wednesday song of the day: "San Franciscan Nights" by Eric Burdon and The Animals. The connection between Eric Burdon and yesterday's song of the day by War led me to look a little earlier in his career. Burdon is best known as the singer for The Animals, a group he formed with former members of The Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo in 1962. The Animals had several hits in the early and mid 1960s, among them the classics "House of the Rising Sun" and "We Gotta Get Out of this Place".
By September 1966, tensions within the band, exacerbated by financial mismanagement, caused The Animals to break up. In December 1966, Burdon formed a new band, with one former Animal and three new members. This band was called "Eric Burdon and The Animals" (or sometimes "Eric Burdon and The New Animals"). The new band relocated from England to San Francisco. With the move came a new musical direction. The blues-rock of The Animals became a hard version of the psychedelic sound then emerging from San Francisco.
The 1967 hit San Franciscan Nights was a result of this new direction, and a love song to Burdon's new home. The song was written very shortly after the move, however, in which San Francisco had a rare two-week warm stretch, leading Burdon to include the theme "warm San Franciscan nights", when in fact, even in summer most nights in San Francisco were far from warm. Burdon claims the song was inspired by an evening he spent in the city with Janis Joplin. The song reached #9 on the US charts.
The second incarnation of The Animals broke up at the end of 1968, although there have been several reunions of the original Animals and the later Eric Burdon and the Animals since then, along with a court case that led to Burdon gaining ownership of the band name The Animals in 2013. The Animals (specifically the first version) were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

Thursday song of the day: "This Is What Rock N Roll Looks Like" by Porcelain Black. Industrial-pop singer Porcelain Black calls herself the offspring of Marilyn Manson and Britney Spears, but to my ears at least, her music seems much more on the Britney side of things.
Born Alaina Marie Beaton in Sterling Heights, Michigan, Porcelain Black signed to Virgin Records at the age of 18. She recorded under the name Porcelain and the Tramps, but Virgin would not release any of her music, wanting pure pop records instead of the industrial-pop. With Virgin refusing to release her music, she posted it digitally on Myspace, getting over 10 million hits in a few months. In addition, she wrote songs for other artists and did some modeling to get by.
Eventually she left Virgin and signed with another label, which did release a few of her singles in 2011. This Is What Rock N Roll Looks Like was her first official single, and reached #44 on the dance chart. More disputes with the new record company followed, and her first album, titled "Mannequin Factory" is yet to be released, although two more singles came out in 2014, so there is still hope for an album release.
I find this a catchy little tune that captures the attitude - if not the sound - of rock and roll pretty well. As mentioned, her industrial-pop seems to be more pop than industrial. Still, it's a refreshing change from the Taylor Swifts and One Directions of the current music scene. I can live without the Lil Wayne sections of the song, but I still can't help liking it. Call it a guilty pleasure.

Friday song of the day: "You're Gonna Miss Me" by The 13th Floor Elevators. The legendary 13th Floor Elevators were one of the first psychedelic bands. Led by Roky Erickson, the band formed in 1965 in Austin, Texas. They released their first single, You're Gonna Miss Me, in early 1966. Before breaking up in 1969, the band released four albums and several singles, and had only minimal national success. The debut single was the only song that cracked the charts, topping out at #55. Their influence on later bands far exceeded their sales, however.
The breakup was largely the result of Roky Erickson's mental illness, which became apparent in 1968. He was then diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, and was institutionalized from 1969 through 1972, where he was subjected to forced electroshock therapy. Since his release, Erickson has periodically performed, both in various bands and solo.

Belated Saturday song of the day: "Where is My Mind?" by The Pixies. From the Pixies' 1988 debut album, "Surfer Rosa", Where is My Mind? was written by singer Black Francis (Real name Charles Thompson, although he records his solo work under the name Frank Black). It was inspired by a scuba trip in the Caribbean.
The Pixies were one of the key groups who inspired the indie rock boom of the 1990s, influencing others and participating in offshoot bands such as The Breeders and The Muffs, as well as solo work. The Pixies broke up in 1993, although they reformed in 2004.

Sunday song of the day: "Trouble" by Shampoo. Shampoo was a duo formed by two British girls in 1993. They put out bubblegum pop, and had a minor hit with "Trouble" from their debut album "We Are Shampoo". It was later featured on the soundtrack to the film "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers".
Yeah, it's a very lightweight song, but something about it I like. Another guilty pleasure.

Monday song of the day "A Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procol Harum. The debut single by the English group Procol Harum, A Whiter Shade of Pale has become a classic since its release in 1967. The music is based on several works by Bach.
The song reached #5 in the United States, and #1 in the United Kingdom and numerous other countries. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998.

There are several lines where he is talking about Ronda too.
I got a Magic Johnson
It’s like a Magic Wand allows me to not let a blonde arouse me
If Ronda Rousey was on the couch with the condoms out
Holding a thousand Magnums at once to pounce me
I’ll laugh in response to how she dances and flaunts it around me
Her flat little badonkadonk is bouncing around
And all I see is Paulie Malignaggi, she’s slaughterhouse in a blouse
