I don't understand why BJ penn is so popular. He is a good fighter, but he is not THAT amazing. He is 16-7-2, witch is good in that he has won more than he lost. I just don't get why so many people are ALL ABOUT Penn.
Don't get me wrong I like to watch Penn fights to, but I cant even respect him anymore because when he gets a loss it is never his fault, I mean GSP was "greasing" right?

@RWlawman I agree, i cant stand Tito Ortiz and a few others myself. As for his record, yeah It includes the best names in the game and that does grant more respect to a lesser record but there are people out there with just as many big names as Penn but most of them are wins. I used to like Penn, and still enjoy his fights. I never said he was not a good fighter or anything, I just don't see why people get so fanatical about Penn. I don't like BJ anymore because of all the excuses he / his camp make about his losses and stuff like when he flipped out at Fitch via twitter because Fitch stated that if he was offered Penn or Diaz he would take them as his next fight.
Honestly I feel bad for Penn, because the 2 weight classes he can go to (155 & 170) are dominated by GSP and Edger leaving Penn no real hope of another title as he lost to both of them 2x

I dont like his attitude but I like to watch him fight. He fights at multiple weight classes and goes all out. If he would lose his whiny attitude he might even be one of my favorites.

I don't see 155 being dominated by Edgar...He's never proven he can beat Maynard and once Gray takes the belt at 136 I could see BJ dropping down and getting his belt back...Edgar and GSP just happen to have BJ's #...As for why he's so popular I think its already been stated...He doesn't care who he fights when he fights...He just comes out and fights whether its a 220# Lyoto Machida or 155# Kenny Florian...I agree BJ will go down as one of the biggest wasted talents in the history of the game, but he's still accomplished more then most ever will!! He beat Matt Hughes when Hughes was unbeatable

I would also like to point out that even though I am a BJ Penn fan, he did lose to Matt Serra in their match up. That was a bad decision call, so he should have another loss on his record. Either way though, Penn is a huge part of MMA, and has contributed so much to the popularity of the sport. Unfortunately, his prime was not timed that well. I think he passed his prime just before the UFC took it's huge leap in notoriety. Penn could have extended his prime if he would have trained a little more seriously, but as Soccer said above, that's why Penn will go down as the biggest waste of talent in the sport. It shows how much natural talent Penn has though, that he rarely seemed to give it all he had, and was still a force to be reckoned with, and fought with the top tier of competition in the lightweight division and welterweight division.

@Lawman.. But then you could argue he beat GSP and Edgar so he should have 2 more wins on his record..

@Thiago while that 1st fight with GSP was razor thin either way I think GSP won it with the takedown late.

I could see your argument for Edgar vs. Penn 1, but Edgar vs. Penn 2 was all Frankie.

He's willing to fight anyone at any weight class. A lightweight champ, yet took Machida to a decision? His interviews are great, all of his fights are exciting to watch, he's a great person outside the octagon. It's easy to see why anyone would like the guy.

I'm also completely envious of a guy who gets to do nothing besides MMA/BJJ in Hawaii, with some of the world's most beautiful beaches within walking distance of the gym. That is living the life!
