Along with Mitrione announcing he's signed with Bellator, Rory Mac has announced that the Wonderboy fight in June is the last on his UFC contract.

His 11-month layoff makes a ton of sense now, as the UFC did this with Roger Huerta and would have done it with Dustin Poirier had he not re-signed. They attempt to freeze you out to get you to renew your contract, but Rory was having none of it.

If he wins, he'll get PAID. But interesting to see if Bellator wants him coming off back-to-back losses if Wonderboy gets it done.

Oh ****.  Talk about a potential high level free agent, Rory is it.  The UFC better throw everything and the kitchen sink to keep him.

Really shysterous of the UFC if true. Now I kind of hope Rory wins, you'd think Bellator might shell out the big clams for a guy like him.

I think they would.  He's an exciting fighter and can draw serious numbers.  He fits what they are looking for.

He also dropped a nugget about GSP, suggesting that he's looking for much more money from the UFC before making a return.

26-year-old, constant contender that's only recently lost to Lawler and possibly Wonderboy (two extremely tough opponents)? Win or lose, I think the UFC would be nuts not to shell out cash to re-sign him.

Bellator WILL throw everything and the kitchen sink at him. A potential Benson vs. MacDonald welterweight title fight? Sign me up.

@dtrain Exactly.  I think the UFC is taking too much of a risk low balling fighters on contracts and expect them to just be okay with it.

Letting Rory walk would be a terrible business decision for the UFC, but I don't know what they expected other fighters to do when they gave Conor $1 mil just to show up for a fight.

It's smart to test and see what you are worth. Just because he is testing doesn't mean he will be gone. Of the fighters who recently did this UFC hung on to the majority especially the fighters that have title aspirations.

He's not what Bellator is looking for. He's to young and didn't fight on any of the first on UFC 1 through UFC 20. Plus I'm sure the UFC is willing to shell out some serious bucks for him.

Are you sure the 11 month layoff didn't have anything to do with him getting punched in the head 70 times, plus breaking his nose and foot? At any rate UFC needs to resign him, he's too important at welterweight to consider letting go and just had the UFC FotY last year.

I'm with @Pillory here.  Maybe the contract was a factor to a degree, but MacDonald got the beating of a lifetime from Robbie Lawler and was most likely put on an extended medical suspension.  There is no way anyone can take that kind of beating and come back in a couple months after looking like this in the aftermath:

Don't be shocked if the UFC ****s on Rory with low-ball b/s and he signs with Bellator.

He is young so for the long term, staying in the UFC will be to his advantage.
