I think welterweight and lightweight are 1 and 1a. Lightheavy isn't too far behind either one of them though.

Too me a weight class that has a dominant champion isn't deep...Lightweight right now I think is the deepest on all 7 in the UFC

I agree with @soccerkicks, lightweight, easily is the deepest. Too many solid wrestlers improving their striking with its fair share of BJJ guys. Its gonna be hard for anyone to hold onto that title.

I agree Lightweight, it used to be LHW when the fight cards were freshly stacked with undefeated records.

Lightweight is deepest both in number of fighters and number of elite fighters.  I agree with pwilson, I doubt anyone will hold that title for long.

I think welterweight is getting really good.  GSP is a dominant champ, but the next tier below him is stacked with really good fighters.  They just haven't shown themselves to be GSP good.

Maybe the WW aren't really that good they just look good against other WW...BJ Penn fought the #2 WW in the world to a draw and some even felt he won outright...Could Shogun go to HW and fight JDS to a draw?

Styles make fights, right?  BJ has the style and skill to grapple with Fitch competitively.  No, I don't believe that Shogun could take JDS to a draw.

Then again, I'm a big fan of BJ and JDS, so take it with a grain of salt if you wish.

when  you see some places that don't have cerrone in the top 20 you know the lightweights are  the deepest division.a win this sunday and he will propel to top 15 in anybody's rankings. media rankings.

I'm a huge Penn and Shogun fan as well...Fitch is too big for a lot of WW and a natural LW fought him to a draw...size matters in fights too

that is funny b/c edgar is five foot 6 inches. he might even be an inch shorter than that. he is small to be champ of the LW's

Also true.  So are you saying that Fitch isn't really all that good, he just fights guys even less good?  I'm not really a Fitch fan, but his wrestling is impressive in its dominance.  You could be right though, it did him precious little good against the champ.

@Soccer - Penn is just an awful style matchup for Fitch. That said, I don't think Fitch is legitimately the 2nd best at WW, it's just where he ranks currently. They say he's cleared out everyone but GSP but he's really only beat Alves and Thiago. He squeaked by Sanchez and Pierce. He's never fought(and won't fight) Koscheck who I think would beat him, hasn't fought Condit, Kampmann, Rumble, Ellenberger, Shields, Hendricks, or Story. I think he'd lose to a lot of them.

WW is stacked but seems uncompetitive since GSP is so far ahead of the pack. LW is very, very deep. LHW has a super talented top 5-10. MW isn't that empty either, Anderson is also just so far ahead of the pack like GSP.

Welterweight has got to be one of the weakest divisions, it doesn't really have anyone good I mean come on The Spaniard? He beats Rick Story who beat Thiago a month before and this guy is already considered top 10? Lightweight by a mile is the deepest then Light heavyweight. Welterweight is just sad they have brought in TWO STRIKEFORCE fighters to fight for the belt, so explain why this is one of the deepest please enlighten me.
