Whenever you have a guy who has been on a long layoff and fighting another guy that hasn't I usually go for the guy who has been fresher and fighting more in this case you have two guys that have both had long layoffs. I gotta say Pettis keeps the belt here.

If Pettis manages to put together a string of good defenses without these long layoffs he can become a marquee "face of the UFC" type of fighter ... don't know if he's fragile or doesn't look after himself properly, but someone should get on that **** fast ...

I think he has a fragile body type that easily injured, but also think he a type of fighter who wants to be as close to 100% every single time he fights. He seems to not be willing to fight injured. I think there are a fair amount of fighters who would have fought some of the times Pettis has pulled out. This is just my opinion, but that is how I feel about it.

@Franklin: Probably true. Then again, there may be injuries (say knee or shoulder) that a wrestler or less dynamic striker can fight through. Pettis's entire game relies on pinpoint accuracy, movement and power. I think even a tweaked knee dangerously alters his game.

I think Melendez has all the tools to win this fight. This is going to be the toughest fight in Pettis' career. Either guy can win and won't be a walk in the park for either. I give Melendez a slight edge in wrestling and dirty boxing.

Pettis is capable of sniping anyone and making it look easy, but Melendez definitely has the skills to give Pettis a run for his money.  Maybe even win.

Interesting fight, one where styles make fights. Anthony "Showtime" Pettis' athleticism versus the pure brawling style of Gilbert Melendez. "El Nino" may have a shot if he can catch the Lightweight Champ early in the fight with dominant strikes though I wouldn't be surprised if Pettis surprised Melendez with the same armbar submission that he used in his 2nd fight with Benson Henderson and/or the infamour Showtime kick from the WEC days in his 1st fight with Benson.

Not expecting much from Gil. a few takedowns here and there, but thats it.

Gil is no stranger to playing it safe and scoring points but i can't imagine him doing it on the ground, he'll more than likely try to open up with GnP which will give Pettis openings to threaten with subs or escape.

Striking is a shutout. Melendez throws a lot of arm punches and is very wide with his strikes. Pettis SHOULD light him up on the feet.

Since the Cesar Gracie vs. technical kicker record is like 0 to 1000 I'm going with Pettis. I hope it's an epic five round fight though.

Gil has been one of my favorites ever since his epic war with Kawajiri back in the day.  I hope he gets it done, but I can't pick against Pettis.
