All respect, but the Axe Murderer had looked like such total crap in his last few fights before the Leben bout that it honestly wasn't that big of a surprise.
Werdum over Fedor was the end of an era, but Werdum was near-legendary himself by that point. Bigfoot, on the other hand, was probably at the peak of his powers, but he was never a threat for the Hall of Fame.
Serra over GSP was a huge upset at the time, and the directions both men's careers took afterwards has made it more stark over time. That fight may well have made GSP the fighter he became, though. He went from talented athlete to the most crazy-prepared man in the history of combat sports. At his peak, the man was training seven times a DAY. That fight showed him how many ways there were to lose - even to an inferior opponent. GSP made sure none of them ever happened to him again.
The Takase fight had a similar effect on Anderson, albeit earlier in his career. Ready to quit the sport, he signed on with the Nog brothers instead. The sport would never be the same again. By the time he lost to Weidman, the looked nigh invincible (though the years were catching up to him).
I hesitate to put Rousey/Holm so high because Holm was so qualified, but her performances going into the Rousey fight were tepid, and Rousey was riding so high that defeat was unthinkable. Maurice Smith was nothing special going into the Coleman fight whilst Coleman was almost a god, but Smith integrated competent ground defense with his pro kickboxing background and gave us a preview of where the sport was going. It was a huge upset and a landmark fight.
Dropping the Kimbo fight in there because it increasingly seems like it was meant to be a work - and Seth was coming in after an unnecessary weight cut with zero prep for Kimbo. Maybe that's a dodgy pick regardless.
