Gonzaga vs. Filipović Wiki
When Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic entered the UFC in 2007, many felt that it was only a matter of time before the 2006 Pride Openweight Grand Prix winner challenged for the UFC Heavyweight Championship. But Cro Cop’s decision not to train in a cage may have affected the outcome of his second fight with the promotion, as Brazilian heavyweight Gabriel Gonzaga sent his title hopes crashing to the ground with one of the greatest and most unexpected knockouts in MMA history.
"I'm going to go in and show the world how I'm prepared standing up and on the ground," Gonzaga said in the pre-fight lead-ins. "Everybody has a plan until they get hit," Filipovic responded. "He is a tough guy, but I'm going to beat him." Gonzaga entered the cage first. Couture: "I think he's got a chance. He's got heavy hands and underrated speed for his size."
“Cro Cop” entered next to a classic Joe Rogan observation: "That is the most intimidating man to ever come in to Duran Duran music.”
The first round started with a modest surprise, as Gonzaga took “Cro Cop” down and pounded on him with unanswered elbows for a number of minutes. The Croatian striking sensation seemed out of his element in the cage and perhaps somewhat dizzied from the elbow strikes. When the action resumed on the feet, Gonzaga shocked the world by flat-lining his opponent with a head kick at the 4:51 mark. Filipovic collapsed under his own weight, his knee buckling beneath him, a victim of the same high kick that paved his way to fame and fortune. Goldberg: "We are beginning to expect the unexpected here in the Ultimate Fighting Championship."
“Cro Cop” went on to lose his next UFC fight to Cheick Kongo and was cut by the promotion, but returned shortly thereafter to increased warmth and popularity from the Octagon crowds. For his part, Gonzaga became one of the most respected heavyweight finishers in the division, battling tooth and nail in a losing title bid against Randy Couture in his next fight.
