Quote:
Melvin Guillard can't make up his mind.

"The Young Assassin" recently knocked out Shane Roller at UFC 132 on July 2 in Las Vegas. The blowout win was his fifth in a row and marked his eighth win in nine fights.

At the post-fight press conference he was taking aim at Dennis Siver, ready and willing to throw down with the man he knocked out back in 2008.

Then, with championship gold on his brain, he turned his sights on Jim Miller, the bully on the block that all the top lightweights want a piece of.

However, perhaps realizing the low percentage chance either bout has of actually coming to fruition, Guillard has since turned his attention to more realistic goals.

Such as Joe Lauzon.

"I don't want to try to throw a name out there, but I was thinking maybe I could ask them to fight Joe Lauzon. Right now technically nobody else is available, he already fought and walked away with a submission of the night victory, he didn't take any damage in his last fight so maybe he'll want to take the fight."

Indeed, as told to MMAWeekly.com, Guillard vs. Lauzon would undoubtedly present an interesting clash of styles and both guys are available and (likely) more than willing to fight sooner rather than later.

In fact, Melvin made sure to say he would love to fight at the upcoming UFC 136 event in Houston, Texas on Oct. 8. But hey, if UFC needs another great match-up on Spike TV for the "Battle on the Bayou" fight card, he's down for that, too.

Think Melvin would get another quick win against Lauzon, but if they want the fight I'd like to see it

I'd say Lauzon has a decent shot at the upset. He's willy in the first round and has solid power, not to mention if it hits the ground Guillard would need to watch out for a lot of sub attempts. I still would say Guillard by KO 9.5 times out 10.

It would be a very stellar match up. I just don't know what Melvin gains from it. He needs to call out fighters on the very top of the heap. I like J-Lo. Maybe he wants to stay active but I think if he is defeated it doesn't help him in the rankings at all.
On paper this is going to be an exciting fight and I won't complain. Melvin isn't playing it safe he wants to fight whoever is available.
But logically if he wants to smell the gold he has to wait and fight top contenders.

Wonder if he'd prefer the Fight Night card in his hometown of New Orleans, but figures they won't give him a fight that quick

No lightweight fights rumored for that card yet, but Guillard would be huge addition especially in the UFC's first trip to New Orleans since UFC 37

Guillard vs. Lauzon would be a great fight. True Guillard has a lot to lose if he loses the fight, but if he wins, he'll silence a bunch of critics that are saying that Guillard's submission defense and overall ground game are still his biggest weakness. If he avoids takedowns, doesn't gas, and turns in another dominating and/or exciting performance it will prove that Guillard has truly rounded out his overall fight game.

It has to be remembered that Guillard's biggest win to date, is the upset KO win over Evan Dunham. Shane Roller is a good fighter, but he's not in the top tier of the LW division. Neither is Joe Lauzon, but I think Lauzon is a step up from Shane Roller.

It might be the fight that Guillard needs to prove that he is ready to face the top tier fighters of the LW division.

Is Evan Dunham really his biggest win or Dennis Siver?

Dennis Siver. I think it would be a crazy first round since they both start so strong and in round 2 Guillard would get the knockout

@body, Jackson clearly told Melvin to call Lauzon. Lauzon a big name, and a very good match up for Melvin. Honestly don't think Melvin scared of anyone in the division, but I think he trainers, know that he does not necessarily match up that great against the Maynards of the division. So there trying to stay away from them, unless it for a title.

How on gods green earth, did u come to such a conclusion?

For starters, Maynard is one of the few guys as large as Guillard, he also likely stronger. He also very capable of bring Guillard to the ground and keeping him there.

And before you even try to bring up Guillard take down defense, it not even remotely on the level of Maynard wrestling and never has been. He shown good TDD, against mediocre wrestler, he never step in the ring with anyone as large or as capable of a wrestler has Maynard.
