I think that the insurance is mandatory to make the sport legit.
Fighters that used to fight injured because they had no other choice, though more "exciting" and "manly" is wrong if you want to call it a sport.
The way you work around the "injury bug" in my opinion, is have thicker rosters (like the UFC does) and an alternate or two that stay somewhat ready for each weight class on the bout (or level of competition per weight class, so you don't have GSP ending up fighting Wonderboy because he's the WW alternate). They'd be payed an agreed "alternate fee" if they don't end up fighting (more money, the higher up on the card the bout is). If the UFC STILL needs a replacement after that (two injuries) then they can start their usual scurry for opponents.
This way, at least you know the replacement isn't completely out of shape (or close to that) even if he isn't as mouthwatering a matchup as the original fighter. Plus, fighters that aren't fighting can have a little extra cash during their wait and motivation to keep training in the off time.
Just the seed of an idea, I'm pretty sure there are quite a few wrinkles to iron out if you really would like to incorporate it, but it's somewhere to start ...

In the attempt to think outside the box - just as the auto insurance industry has a 'good driver discount', why not create a similar bonus for MMA fighters.
If a fighter goes 12 months without a significant injury, give them maybe a $3,000 bonus. That way, you have an incentive to not take unnecessary time off of training, unless of course you have an injury that needs care.
Of like yossgold suggested above, give a bonus for not taking time off between fights. Not excessive or anything too extreme, but maybe $3,000 per year.
Fighters are like all the rest of us and would respond to financial incentives, if they existed. At least I hope they would.

You know Bill, I think you may be onto something there. What I'd love to see more than anything else is for fighters to stop injuring themselves at training because they are training too hard. While I'm sure $3,000 might not be quite enough to persuade fighters from over-training, maybe with another incentive or two, maybe the UFC (and other organizations) could be able to convince the fighters to not try to kill themselves during sparring sessions....because IMO, I think that over-training during sparring is what's causing most of the injury problems here.

When fighters train in their striking, and spar with their training partners, they should always wear protective headgear and mouthpieces.
And on top of that, they shouldn't hit each other full force to the head. Full force to the body, yes. But pull their shots to the head. Like in karate tournaments, where contact is not allowed.

I really don't think that interfering in the way a fighter trains is the right way to go ...
The organization has to have plans B and C for when the fighters get injured, you can't go around telling fighters to train in a way that might make them feel unprepared for a fight.
For instance, I bet you a lot of the injuries are during wrestling sparring (that's where you tear ACLs, MCLs and stuff), but how are you going to ask someone to "go easy" on the wrestling sparring when he's preparing for the fight of his life against GSP or if he's preparing for a fight against Chael Sonnen where he knows that if he negates his wrestling he'll probably win while if he doesn't he's more or less in for 15-25 minutes of punishment?
If a fighter gets injured too many times in training, believe me, he'll change his training on his own because he doesn't get payed to train and his livelihood will be affected.
But we need to look at it from a macro point of view, as an organization the UFC needs to be a bit more prepared for curve balls and as fans we need to understand that MMA has changed and become a legitimate sport that athletes make a living off and know that they shouldn't do it if it risks their career/health because they don't have a choice like they used to. It's all about adjusting to the new (and very positive) reality, both from a logistic point of view and from the fan's expectations point of view.

@Bill Burgess. Great list. I'm not ready to say the 2 are related just yet. Maybe for the lower income fighters, but not for the big draws. They would have easily been able to pay those bills. Most importantly, if you're hurt, you can't fight, you can't get that payday.
I also believe it's because of the growth of the UFC. 10 years ago, there weren't as many cards, so if a fighter had a minor to moderate injury, they would probably suck it up and fight because the next card may not be for a while.
Side note: not in the camp that believes we have too many UFC events. I love being able to watch the UFC every few weeks, especially during the NBA & NFL offseason.
