Gilbert Burns (+138) vs. Jack Della Maddalena (-170)

Predictions: 10 of 14 Winners, 6 Perfect, 690 Points   |   Tied for 1312th

Filling out the main card is an important fight at welterweight between Gilbert Burns and Jack Della Maddalena . Although I can understand the support coming in for Maddalena, I warn anyone who is completely discounting Burns in this spot. Despite putting on some barnburner performances at welterweight, Burns is not beyond returning to his grappling base to win fights (e.g. his fight with Stephen Thompson). Should Burns elect to test Maddalena’s takedown defense and decision-making in this fight, then no one should be surprised. That said, I still find myself siding with Maddalena in this spot. Many may point to his Bassil Hafez fight or the back exposure he offers in scrambles, but I believe that those things aren’t as troubling looks if properly contextualized. In fact, if Maddalena can prove that he can survive Burns’ grappling offense in the first round, then the Australian should be particularly live to find a finish in the second frame. The pick is Maddalena by knockout in Round 2.

Prediction Comments

Predictions: 7 of 14 Winners, 5 Perfect, 500 Points   |   Tied for 5234th

O'Malley vs. Vera II
Sean O'Malley, TKO, R2
I think Vera is a little over rated and I think Sean actually finishes him

Poirier vs. Saint-Denis
Benoit Saint-Denis, TKO, R2
DP's takedown defense will be challenged and he is open for a TKO or submission. But if he survives he will put BSD out late

Holland vs. Page
Michael Page, DEC
Boring low volume decision where the counter striker wins

Burns vs. Maddalena
Gilbert Burns, SUB, R2
Close fight, but I think Burns gets the takedowns, and the skill gap on the ground is too much. Sub or ground control for 3 rounds

Yan vs. Song
Yadong Song, DEC
In a 3 rounder I think Song will just be too fast. Going to decision either way. Close fight

Blaydes vs. Almeida
Jailton Almeida, SUB, R2
I think Almeida gets the takedown and gets the back to finish

Cerminara vs. Barber
Maycee Barber, DEC
Barber's forward pressure should win a damage vs volume match

Gamrot vs. dos Anjos
Mateusz Gamrot, DEC
RDA is very tempting, especially as Gamrot has no control on the ground. But I just think he will be relentless with the wrestling and RDA always struggles when he can't control where the fight goes

Munhoz vs. Phillips
Kyler Phillips, DEC
Phillips will be too fast in the first 2 rounds where Pedro probably wins the 3rd. Also Phillips has amazing BJJ

Lins vs. Cutelaba
Ion Cutelaba, TKO, R1
I think Lins is a fraud. Ion gets the takedowns here. He is on all the juice

Pereira vs. Oleksiejczuk
Michał Oleksiejczuk, DEC
I think Lord Michals pressure and body work will be too much. Possibly even a late R3 KO. Pereira's power is over stated

Despaigne vs. Parisian
Robelis Despaigne, TKO, R1
Setup

Vergara vs. Almabaev
Asu Almabaev, SUB, R2
Setup

Wood vs. Moroz II
Maryna Moroz, SUB, R2

Does anyone else besides JoJo retire tonight? Cerminara, Burns, and Poirier are all at crossroads in their career.
