While the UFC 47 main event grudge match between Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell was the most lucrative Pay Per View match since the UFC 40 fight between Ortiz and Ken Shamrock, the UFC 48 main event between Shamrock and Kimo Leopoldo drew even more buys at 110,000.
In the main event of the evening, Shamrock defeated Leopoldo by kneeing him into submission in the clinch at the 1:23 mark of the first round. The event demonstrated the drawing power of the biggest names over the highest quality fighters, as neither Shamrock nor Leopoldo were still considered among the best light heavyweight fighters in the world. Shamrock, however, still managed to out-draw nearly every other fighter in the UFC in terms of North American fan interest.
