My Summary

This is my top 10 favorite Lightweight fights of all time in MMA.

  1. 1

Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard II
    Edgar vs. Maynard II
Fight Ends in a Draw After 5 Rounds
    2011 | UFC 125
And here it goes my favorite lightweight fight of all times. This fight was the reason I became a fan of Frankie Edgar. This guy showed a huge heart never seen before, being knocked down at least 4 TIMES in the first round and stunned again and again, making this round border a rare 10x7. But Frankie managed to survive the storm and secured an incredible second round with a beautiful takedown at the end. On the third I saw Frankie in the lead until Gray connected a strong blow, which was enough to make Gray aggressive again and secure the round. In the last two rounds I saw an enormous balance, where I gave Edgar the fourth and the fifth could have gone to anyone. The fight ended in a draw, which I thought was fair, since I scored Maynard: 1st: 10x8, 3rd: 10x9; Edgar: 2nd: 10x9, 4th: 10x9, 5th: a very tight 10x9. So this was the best lightweight fight I've ever seen in my life and I don't think I'll ever see another lightweight fight better than this one.
  2. 2

    Gilbert Melendez vs. Diego Sanchez
    Melendez vs. Sanchez
    Gilbert Melendez | Decision
    2013 | UFC 166
Diego Sanchez and Gilbert Melendez is the best slugfest that I had ever see, period. These two was just exchanges punches like two MOFOs for three rounds, and it was incredible. Diego shows here that he was a maniac, all covered in blood and calling Melendez to a brawl, holy ****, this was insane. The highlight of the fight was when Diego dropped Melendez on the third, almost securing a submission, and after that, in the last 10 seconds, these two MOFOs just back with that stand and bang war, holy ****, that was amazing.
  3. 3

    Clay Guida vs. Diego Sanchez
    Guida vs. Sanchez
    Diego Sanchez | Decision
    2009 | The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale
Talking about war, Diego Sanchez is a specialist. Diego Sanchez and Clay Guida starred in one of the most intense staredowns of MMA, and also one of the best wars I have ever seen. In the first seconds of the fight, Diego already started all over Guida with a flurry of punches, causing a small exchange where Sanchez took the advantage with punches and flying knees. The highlight of the round was when Sanchez connected a high kick that knocked Guida down, almost knocking him out. But Guida proved to have a titanium chin and simply came back hard in the second round, arranging a takedown and dominating the actions. Sanchez came with brutal elbows in a lower position, opening a cut on the top of Guida's head, turning this brawl into a bloody fight. Guida managed a smooth round in the third when he managed another takedown, thus guaranteeing the round. The only thing I disagree with this fight was the decision, where I think there should be a draw, because I gave 10x8 to Sanchez in the 1st and 10x9 in the 2nd and 3rd to Guida. But anyway, this fight is a great classic.
  4. 4

Max Holloway vs. Dustin Poirier II
    Holloway vs. Poirier II
    Dustin Poirier | Decision
    2019 | UFC 236
That one happended in the last year, so it's very fresh in my memory. Shortly after witnessing a war between Adesanya and Gastelum, I found it impossible for Holloway and Poirier to wage a war of such magnitude that these two middle weights mentioned earlier fought. It wasn't the same, but it was more brutal, and better yet, there were 5 rounds of brawl between Holloway and Poirier. Poirier showed a lot of power in the first two rounds, wobbling Holloway on several occasions and almost knocking out the Hawaiian. But Holloway brought balance to this battle as soon as Poirier was slow, bringing an intense volume of blows, bothering Poirier in the next two rounds. The last round was decisive for the fight, and it was also a very difficult round to score because of so much balance. But Poirier's power took away the balance difference, giving Poirier the fight by 48x47 on my score.
  5. 5

    Joe Lauzon vs. Jim Miller
    Lauzon vs. Miller
    Jim Miller | Decision
    2012 | UFC 155
The bloodiest UFC fight so far. I'm very impress how almost nobody talk about this one. This fight just show to you how much heart Joe Lauzon has after taking a brutal beatdown in the first round by Miller and surviving. Miller just put on a nasty cut on Lauzon's forehead in the beginning of the fight with one of the most brutal elbows throwed on the standing. It was a bloodbath in the octagon, but somehow, with a lot of courage and heart, Lauzon managed to balance the actions in the second round, almost bringing big problems for Miller at the end of the fight with a heel hook and a very tight guillotine that could have ended the fight if there were 10 more seconds left. I scored 30x27 for Miller the first time I watched it, given Miller's small dominance at the start of the third, but 29x28 is fair.
  6. 6

    Nick Diaz vs. Takanori Gomi
    Diaz vs. Gomi
Fight Ends in a No Contest
    2007 | Pride 33
Takanori Gomi was consider the best Lightweight of the world on that time period, and Nick Diaz was just another obstacle for him. But when this fight begin, man, those guys was exchanging punches. Diaz was very smart on the beginning of the fight trying to submit Gomi, but when those guys back in the feet, you could see fireworks. Good exchanges beetwen these two, Gomi dropping Diaz, Nick putting pression on Gomi with his boxing and a beatiful gogoplata by Diaz finishing the fight. If you don't had watched this one so far, just go watch.
  7. 7

    Justin Gaethje vs. Michael Johnson
    Gaethje vs. Johnson
    Justin Gaethje | KO/TKO | Round 2
    2017 | The Ultimate Fighter 25 Finale
I remember when I watch this one and how much excited I was. Justin Gaethje was one the most exciting fighters to watch and when I found out that he has signed with the UFC to fight with Michael Johnson, my head just blow away. Justin was in big trouble in the first round when Johnson connected a big right hand and still in the beginning of the second. But you don't call Gaethje a toughest son of a ***** for nothing. The man just destroyed Johnson's legs with that hard low kicks and then just put him away with big flying knee followed by another knee to finish the fight in the second. That was a good scrap.
  8. 8

    Eddie Alvarez vs. Justin Gaethje
    Alvarez vs. Gaethje
    Eddie Alvarez | KO/TKO | Round 3
    2017 | UFC 218
We can't deny that Eddie is a beast just because he got embarassed by Conor Mcgregor a fight early, the man can put on a show. And when you put two beasts inside the octagon to battle one each other, you got this 3 round war between Eddie and Justin. I mean the nasties body shots that Eddie was throwing, the nasties leg kicks that Gaethje was throwing, and the knee that ended the fight, just put this one on that position for me. Plus: the big ball that Justin put on Eddie's face in the 3rd, man, just holy ****.
  9. 9

    Eddie Alvarez vs. Michael Chandler
    Alvarez vs. Chandler
    Michael Chandler | Submission | Round 4
    2011 | Bellator 58
That one was a savage. Two beasts going into a brawl for four straight rounds, throwing big shots at one each other the whole time. The 1st round Chandler trying to take Eddie's head off, the 3rd Eddie trying to take Chandler's head off, and in the end both men give everything they had on this epic one, with Chandler securing the submission win in the 4th.
  10. 10

    Dustin Poirier vs. Dan Hooker
    Poirier vs. Hooker
    Dustin Poirier | Decision
    2020 | UFC Fight Night
This one happened recentrly, but it's already one of my favorites. Hooker just show how of a tough son of a ***** he is, throwing hands at Poirier without respecting his power, especially in the end of the 2nd round where he throw that barrage of punches and knees, damn. And here you can see how much heart Poirier has, after losing the 1st and 2nd round, he just comes back as a beast, throwing hands at Hooker, going to a brawl, going for submissions attempts, securing a big takedown in the end of the fight, winning the 3rd, 4th and 5th securing the victory, thats preety awesome to me to get in that list.
