Small new feature: UFC picking tiers

There's a small new feature that you'll see in UFC event discussion threads.

Everyone who regularly makes UFC picks will be placed into a leaderboard with tiers like Bronze, Gold, Platinum and Diamond. I'm sure there will be questions so here's how it works:

Everyone's tier is automatically calculated based on the last 8 UFC events. So whatever points you had on your picks for those events, they are all rolled up into a total. And then everyone is ranked based on those totals.

After each UFC event is finalized, the numbers and leaderboard will recalculate. What used to be the 8th oldest UFC event will become the 9th oldest event and will no longer be included in the results. And the event that was just finalized will get included. Note that the tiers and leaderboard don't change with partial results midway through an event. It's only once the full event is finished that the leaderboard is reset.

To rise up into the highest tiers you almost certainly want to make sure you get all your picks in. Just cherry-picking the easy fights or the main card only will result in you having almost no chance to be highly ranked!

Other things you can expect to see soon: 

• More leagues beyond the UFC will get their own leaderboards (not all leagues will use 8 events, some will be different)
• An actual leaderboard page will be created outside of the discussion threads. But for now you can only see this stuff in the forum.
• There might be adjustments to the tiers in terms of how many people end up in each of them, and how hard it is to get to the highest tiers.

This is kind of a beta / new feature so be patient with any issues.

Great I see mine right before seeing this thread always appreciate all the free features we get on here!

Are there plans to expand the rankings to other major promotions?  If so, would the rankings be unique to each promotion, or integrated across all promotions?  Thanks.  It's fun to try something new.

yes we will definitely do more promotions beyond the UFC. Just testing it out with the UFC first.  For now it would be unique to each promotion. So there would be a UFC leaderboard, a PFL leaderboard, an LFA leaderboard.

I think this is a great idea.

Very nice feature, I'm interested to see where the 80% pick rate people that pick 2-3 fights a card will be ranked!

those kinds of people might not even meet the threshold to get ranked.

The "Heavy Duty Pickers" are special members on Tapology, and we are very few in numbers, i think it's better to have a "special marking-badge" (probably a different username color or anything similar... !?) !?

Plus it could be nice if we can have a "special open challenge game" with all the available events on Tapology (but on every week will be added all the new events, so we can check out our results and our "rankings" in between us and have some fun all together, plus some other members will want to join this type of picking events... !? Probably it's better to start it in the next year (1/1/2024)... and we can have winners on every month and a total winner in the end of the year... and goes on... !? 

Using totals rather than averages makes it so that say if you were busy and forgot to make picks, your tier is ****** for the next 7 events. Also some people might avoid one or two fights per event because they're too close or have no info on the fighters - but that negatively affects your tier.
IMO you have a threshold like "picked 75% of fights over last 8 events" to qualify for a tier and then use something like avg points per pick i.e. TOTAL_POINTS/NUM_PICKS for ranking.

There are "members" that they don't even make picks or they have made a few picks here and there, and are 1-2-3 years on Tapology, and they are playing the "experts in the threads... ! At least we can use it as a "measuring stick" ... !

Average picks would defeat the purpose and being able to skip even 1 or 2 for free would also warp it imo. It's precisely picking the most difficult fights that makes it so challenging to have a good pick rate when you never cherry pick. However it would be cool if it could extend back further if there are weeks when no picks were made just so that people that are too busy/on vacation/fill in reason here that mmiss a week don't have to wait 2 months to get back in the race. Of course there would have to be a limit on how far back to look.

Perhaps it could even just look for a specific number of the most recent completed cards in picks for x duration back in time since anyone partaking is going to want to pick every fight even if they literally flip a coin on some of them.

duly noted on that. but for now the plan is to encourage people to make all the UFC picks in order to make it an even / competitive field.

As for other major MMA promotions, I generally get my picks in but this will definitely make me pay closer attention once you add it.

i was here to ask the same thing, where are the tiers displayed?

How do we opt out of this?  Epeen in every post is totally unnecessary imo.

I’ll always appreciate adding new fun features

I really like this feature because pick percentage is such a flawed system, but having the last 8 UFC event take the flaws of pick percentage away and have everyone on a even playing field 

I think it would be helpful if the badge can be added into a persons personal picks page. Somewhere on here.
