In the latest Ariel Helwani post-fight interview, Jacob Volkmann said that backstage at the weigh-ins Dana told all the fighters...

"The only reason Cowboy Cerrone is getting this chance is because he's finishing fights, you other guys need to learn to finish fights if you want a chance"

obviously this is Volkmann saying it, so it's not exactly what Dana said probably, but I just thought this was interesting seeing as there is alot of arguments/topic's about boring decisions/finishes.

Even if Dana said it, fans would rather watch fighters who finish fights.

Volkmann needs to learn to "shhhh".  Man.. that guy has some crazy stuff come out of his mouth (post fight with Joe) and if Dana did say that, making it public probably isn't the brainiest of ideas.  As far as finishes... It's just like the "Are you not entertained?!" argument.  Finish your opponent, and the fans will love you for it.. Which leads to "chances" that Dana supposedly mentioned.

Fans are paying money to see exciting fights. I can understand why Dana White is critical of guys like Jon Fitch....

@kalibo: Yeah, Volkmann is a crazy dude. I didn't even get his flat joke after he explained it to Ariel in the post-fight interview.

Dan Hardy just lost his fourth fight in a row but it was still a main event for a UFC card. Free or not, main event is still a prestigious position, in my opinion. Dude comes to entertain and thats that. How often do you see guys on three fight losing skids main eventing UFC events?

Dana is going to give fighters fans want to see the most face time. If you finish you get noticed, I see people post here about how important finishing fights is to them as fans. Some put fighters in the top 10 solely on their ability to finish. So Dana is just reflecting the opinion of a large portion of the fans. The quick road to the top is over submitted and unconscious opponents. The long path goes through a series of judges decisions, If you are going through the judges it better look like Cerrone vs Diaz.

This is somewhat off-topic, but with how much people care about finishes, it's really surprising how small Carlos Condit and Joe Lauzon's fanbases are.

Not only are finishes more entertaining, but with how terrible the judges decisions often are, it is the only real way to guarantee a win.

Yeah that should be the main reason in guys heads...never let it go to the judges.

"[T]his chance" as in a main-card or co-main event spot on ppv? Not all that surprising or controversial, imo, even if true.

@Hybrid, I agree Condit should have a lot more fans than he does, Lauzon on the other hand has gas tank issues and is inconsistent beyond the first round, so I see why his fan base is shaky.

I also believe finishing is the only way to guarantee a win, even beyond bad judging. People always claim that taking it to the judges with LnP is the safest way to victory but really it's not. Every second you are in the ring is a second your opponent can submit or KO you. Volkmann almost got caught by Escudero late in the 3rd and his safe game plan almost went right out the window. Sonnen controlling for 4 rounds winning 20 minutes + against Anderson didn't matter once Anderson sunk in that triangle. Lowe was up 2 rounds to 0 over Lentz going into the 3rd before getting caught in a guillotine. I'm sure there are many examples of this.

What about the fighters that just turtle while they are on the ground so that fighters like Volkmann can't finish?
