I used to be a Frank Mir hater.  His personality really grates on me.  One day I decided to research him on a whim, and I read some articles and watched some videos and by the end of it I still hated him, but I respected him.

After his comeback win last night, I actually think I'm becoming a fan.  It's a weird feeling.

@Dakej I used to hate him as well. His personality was just.........annoying. However he is starting to grow on me a lot. He's actually a pretty decent fighter, and he's not awful in interviews. Honestly, the best thing about Frank is his commentating. I wish he was the main commentator for the UFC. He was really good in the WEC with his commentary. He's not really biased (Joe Rogan, I'm looking at you), and he actually has a really great base of knowledge of the sport (Goldberg, you paying attention).

Mir talks Nogueira submission.

Watch this. It is amazing hearing Mir recall that entire sequence of submitting Nog in such detail right off the top of his head. That is why I loved listening to him on the WEC broadcasts. I think he does a much better analysis of ground fighting than Rogan does.

I've always been a Frank Mir fan, he's been lingering around the end of my Top 10/Top15 favorite fighters for years, especially after the comeback he made after his motorcycle accident. Dude's a goofball, may be a little ****y, but he seems more honest to me and just doesn't back down when people talk shat.

Mortis, I thought Mir's biggest win Saturday wasn't the sub or even the acutal W but the fact that he won AFTER getting tagged. Pretty sure that's a 1st for Mir and he talked about that in the vid also.

Oh yeah but that fight still felt like a "Whew! I got lucky" moment rather than a true comeback. I guess the Wes Combs fight sort of counts also but this one showed a more mature (skill wise) Mir imo.

Either way, this fight makes me want to move Vegas and train with Frank Mir.. there's no doubt he's the best heavyweight submissions expert, now.

EDIT:

Well, I guess he's yet to face Fabricio Werdum.. but I think Mir can best him.

Not a Mir fan, but have to say the sub was amazing.  It would have been incredible anytime again Nog, but when he was almost ko'd, that was pretty slick.

No.. but I've always trained with bigger guys. If I were to fight again.. I would fight at welterweight, or possibly lightweight.. When I was fighting, I fought at middleweight.. but if I was to fight right now with my current weight.. I'd be a light heavyweight, lol.

Is it advantageous to train with heavie fighters because it makes training more difficult than fighting?

Training with bigger fighters generally helps you improve on strength, because they tend to be stronger (but not always).

Training with smaller fighters generally helps you improve on speed, because they tend to be faster (not always).

Mir looked good on the ground, but he was much more tentative then i expected him to be standing up, especially given his previous fight with NOG. That said, NOG finally looked 100% up until his arm was broken, his transitions on the ground would've submitted any other HW other than Mir or Werdum, and his standup looked the best it has in a couple of years. He looked quick, strong, and accurate. I'm actually really excited for his next fight!

@bklettke Don't get your hopes up. That was a nasty break in his humerus. I know he's a tough dude, but with the hip surgery and now this. My guess is he retires. An injury like this will take at least a few months to heal in a guy with a broken down body. Even if he is able to start training again, I highly doubt he would be ready for a fight any time before July. At that point his age, his various injuries and ring-rust become huge factors in how he will perform.

Listening to Mir on The MMA hour right now and i gotta say he pisses me off.

He isn't really giving Nog any credit at all.
