Expected for 209. Unclear if there's one of those shiny Interim belts on the line or not.

I'd ask what ever happened to those good 'ol No. 1-contender bouts to decide a title challenger, but evidently, an interim belt is the only way to get a guaranteed title shot these days.

At least if it is for an interim belt, it'll be a five round fight. I don't think we've seen Khabib in a five round war yet. Also they'll both receive a bump in sponsorship pay from Reebok.

Not the first or second time this fight has been booked. I'm going to hold off until they actually get in there before I get excited and consider this fight happening.

According to Khabib the only reason he cares about if it's for the interim title or not is because he knows that if he's interim champ there's more of a chance he's next for Conor. He feels that if he's interim champ there's no way Nate jumps ahead of him in line (which is actually a possibility that's been thrown out there).

That's also why he's so adamant on fighting on this card specifically, regardless of his opponent. He needs to solidify the shot before Ramadan starts because he knows there's a layoff and if he doesn't fight until then, he most likely doesn't get the next shot at Conor.

Confirmed by the MMAFighting team and the LA Times.

Awesome card, even if there's a fake belt on the line and the PPV won't sell all that well.

Glad it's for the Interim title and imo the real fight to determine the #1 LW in the world.

1) Never know if Conor is even gonna defend against one of them.

2) I think both of them would beat Conor anyway

I think the deciding factor in this fight is going to be Khabib's submission defense. I don't doubt that Khabib's wrestling is good enough to take Ferguson to the ground and keep him there, and I think that Khabib's striking defense (70%) combined with Tony's lack of one punch KO power will allow Khabib to survive on the feet until he can implement his gameplan. He took Abel Trujillo down 21 times in one fight without slowing down, and he's trained his whole life in the mountains of Dagestan. His cardio should hold up. In my mind, the big question mark is if Khabib can prevent Ferguson from snatching onto some choke as Khabib takes him down. Khabib seems to get put into guillotines and such fairly often, although he never has trouble getting out of them. I think he would be wise not to risk getting caught in something against Tony.

When I think about this fight, I can't help but think back to Ferguson vs Castillo. Granted Tony won that fight, but Castillo was able to control him pretty well on the ground and Khabib is a much better grappler than he is.

DrGaze, that was also over 3 years ago.  Just to out this in perspective, Cody garbrandt just beat the most dominant Bantam weight champ ever, when 18 months earlier he lost a round to the 99th best Bantam weight.   Fighters particular ones like Tony/Cody are improving every single fight.  Bringing up fights that far back as if they are relevant, is just not accurate depicting of the fighters current level of skill. These two are light years beyond what they where even a year ago, let a lone over 3 years ago.

@Franklin That's fair. I guess what I really mean is he's always seemed too complacent with being on the bottom and throwing up submissions, to me. While he's a great grappler in his own right, Khabib has made a lot of good grapplers look terrible in comparison by his smothering top control. A 5 round fight favors Ferguson though, so it's still up in the air. We might have our first Russian UFC champ though, so that's exciting!

Ferguson tries to takedown Khabib with a rolling heel-hook, this results in a scramble Khabib then takes the back of a tired Ferguson and sinks in the choke. Tony has good moments with his striking in the first round.

Tired Ferguson? Really? that going to be your prediction? Will say, it quite ballsy, since Ferguson is notorious cardio machine. I wager he has better cardio then Khabib. I think Khabib can certainly win, but find it unlikely it will be due to a tired ferguson. Though perhaps I will be proven wrong.

This fight is some great booking by the UFC. Two of the best on the planet. I think five rounds benefits Tony. I think he catches khabib late. Fourth or fifth round finish for Tony. But it wouldn't surprise me if khabib were able to control Tony for three or four rounds before that. Of course I have been wrong before.

I say Khabib puts him away so it not go to a decision.
