Official. McGregor will remain Featherweight Champion. Rumors peg him defending that belt in January or Super Bowl Weekend. We'll see what happens. This is a great fight and turns UFC 205 from a hardcore fan's card to a blockbuster show.

This hopefully sets up Aldo/Holloway for UFC 206 and Khabib vs Barboza

"McGregor will remain Featherweight Champion" what a ******* joke lol.He won the belt, lost by 2nd round finish in his next fight, split won vs a crappy looking Diaz, and imo will probably lose to Eddie and still be champion.Just silly,it's actually funny.

OMG your av is hilarious!

Obvious choice for the UFC in terms of making 205 a big event. Why lead people on and say Eddie was going to fight Khabib, though?

I think Dana says things just to see the reaction of the mma public and then chooses accordingly.Idk,seems like that most of the time though.

Unlike many,I thought this was a pretty damn good card before this fight....with the addition of this huge fight I feel like the rest of the card (or that fight itself) is going to fall apart.Of course i'm semi joking, but it happens every time, every huge fight card falls apart and ends up 60% of what it was big fight wise.I'm just gonna plan on it falling apart and then if it actually stays mostly together it'll be awesome.

Not that I am saying that Dana White is a narcissist (but I wouldn't disagree if someone else said that) I think he just likes to hear the sound of his own voice.

Kind of a dumb title shot but 205 needed a huge main event and Conor's the only reliable big star these daus. Swear Ferguson and Khabib will have to win 20 straight to get shots however.

I'm a Conor nuthugger but I think not stripping him of the 145lbs strap is a joke. Makes the already dumb interim belt even more worthless and also takes a ****load of sting off the importance of the undisputed belt too.

Had he just won the belt and gone up, I guess I'd get it, but he's been holding up the division for a year and now he's fighting for the 155 strap. Cool, then he's no longer a 145er until further notice. You can't fight 3 fights in a row outside your division and still be called the division's champ.

The UFC are systematically killing the belts system and then they're gonna whine about their champs asking for money fights over relevant contenders? You can't have it both ways, either the belts are worth something or get rid of them.

Not surprising though since the UFC have proven time and again that as far as they're concerned the belt is just a way to get extra PPV buys, not necessarily a real part of the sport. You can see it by how many times they've just randomly created an interim belt just so they can have their stupid champ vs. champ marketing line.

The UFC's currently got 2(!!!) interim champs in divisions where the undisputed champ is still alive, kicking and fighting consistently and hasn't been sidelined for more than what is considered a normal period of time.

Why don't they just create two belts for each division (god knows they've saturated their roster enough to support that) and have a champ vs. champ every other PPV? It would be stupid, but not much more stupid than what's happening right now. **** it, just give everyone belts.

For good marketing reasons they won't strip McGregor of his 145 belt until after this fight, if he beats Alvarez. I think McGregor would prefer to hold that victory over Aldo, forever.

Oh yeah, I'm fully aware of the reasoning ... their 1.6M PPV buys guy juiced up with the taglines "champ vs. champ" for UFC 205 and potentially "first simultaneously two division champ in UFC history" and "#1 p4p fighter on the planet" are worth millions to the UFC.

This is not a "we love Conor" move, this is a "this guy's gonna make us so much money" move.

Haha! I agree, while I was writing it, fully intending it to be ludicrous enough to highlight the current method's idiocracy I found myself thinking "hey, that could actually be a great idea if fornatted properly".

Even if McGregor knocks out Eddie, people will still say he sucks. He's clearly one of the best in the world. Maybe not top 3 P4P, but certainly top at 145 and could be one of the top at 155.

I'm just happy to see McGregor at a weight that isn't 170. I think he's got the ability to wreck Alvarez.

I don't expect McGregor to win this fight, but I do understand the reasons for making it, and for leaving his featherweight belt intact. Since the RDA fight didn't happen I would have preferred Conor defend his featherweight belt before trying to fight the lightweight champion again, but I do understand making the fight. There is a chance here for a simultaneous two-division champion. That's a big deal.

This fight sucks.  It just does.  Why not make McGregor defend his 145 strap against Aldo at NYC?  Why the **** does he, a paper champ who has never defended his belt ONCE, get to ******* fight above 145 three times and not get stripped of his belt?  Like stop pushing the two division champ ****.  MAKE HIM DEFEND HIS ******* BELT OR STRIP HIM!

It's just dumb.  Just ******* dumb.  The UFC is turning into boxing and I ******* hate it.  I'd rather watch RIZIN and Bellator over this.

But then again, I'm just some pleb with a computer.

@skelliher

If he is one of the best in the world, then why did he duck Edgar?

The best in the world usually fight all challengers in their weight class.
