I agree Poirier is no chump and I think McGregor's going to be shocked!

Tap odds on fights like these confuse me. Poirier's 3 career losses are to Cub Swanson, TKZ, and Danny Castillo. McGregor was subbed by Joseph Duffy and Artemij Sitenkov. I realize both fighters have improved since those losses, but I don't understand 70/30 on a toss up fight. Poirier has that jitz, and yeah, so does Brandao, but Brandao also has the fight IQ of a pigeon.

I'm picking McGregor because I've changed my pick 12 times. But I really, really hope Poirier wins.

McGregor's loss to Sitenkov was before Poirier even started fighting, it's not relevant. It's a close fight but McGregor seems to have the edge in striking and while Poirier's sub game is excellent he would have to get Conor to the ground which may not be easy for him. When a fight's close, you still have to pick someone and I had Poirier initially before thinking about it more, especially after reading the Jack Slack article linked in this thread.

McGregor's loss to Sitenkov is about as relevant as Anderson Silva's loss to Takase was when he started his UFC career, if not less so, since it was even further back in time. Sitenkov is basically a guy that quickly dives for a sub and if he can catch his opponent quickly, great, if not, he gets beat later. He managed to catch a very green McGregor, he wouldn't do it again.

If we're discounting losses I guess we can discount Poirier's loss to Castillo since it was contested at 155 where he doesn't fight anymore, it was 4 years ago, etc etc. excuses. If this is the case we're left with Poirier losing to TKZ and Cub Swanson and McGregor losing to Joseph Duffy. I'm fine with my pick.

@CT: It's because I don't think it is a toss up.
Fight picking isn't all about looking at records, it's also about evaluating the skills of fighters when you see them in action. Against common opponents, Poirier has looked iffy to me. He's been dropped in each of his last 2-3 fights by dudes McGregor fought circles around and blew out of the water.
I'm an experienced striker, and McGregor is leaps and bounds ahead of Poirier in that department. Being tough and having KO power does not make you an elite striker. Distance and timing does, and McGregor's got that in spades.
Of course, Poirier is a great fighter and could win this, but if he does, I highly doubt it will be striking. He's an underrated grappler, so that's his best bet IMO.
Furthermore, I don't get why ppl keep bringing up the KZ and Swanson fights when he LOST BOTH. And was FINISHED in one of them. Yes, he's got more experience against top competition. Cool. He lost.

I just watched Poirier's fight with Brookins and Brookins was able to rock him pretty hard before Poirier got the SUB.
For those who don't remember. Brookins striking? Not that good.

That Jack Slack article was a really great read. It highlighted most of my concerns with picking Poirier in this fight. These are both super tough dudes, and top 10 guys without a doubt. I just think Dustin is a little too hitable.

Do not care for Conor McGregor the person, however, this is the best top 10 match-up he could ask for. It could get interesting if Poirier can get him down, but I think he will stand for too long with Conor.

This is the most winnable fight for Conor in the top 10. A lot of people think that in saying that, you're trying to write-off how good McGregor may be. No. It is. 100%. Here is the top 10, tell me who in the top 10 is a more winnable fight for McGregor than Poirier?
- Jose Aldo
- 1. Chad Mendes
- 2. Cub Swanson
- 3. Frankie Edgar
- 4. Ricardo Lamas
- 5. Dustin Poirier
- 6. Korean Zombie
- 7. Dennis Bermudez
- 8. Nik Lentz
- 9. Conor McGregor
- 10. Jeremy Stephens

I think you could argue that Stevens is an easier match up for Conor.

Lentz, Stephens, and Bermudez are all easier fights than Poirier in my opinion.

I could see the argument for Stephens. But I think Lentz would give him fits with his wrestling, and Bermudez is just a beast.

I think Poirier would handle all 3 of those guys pretty easily. Maybe I'm too high on Poirier. lol.

Yeah, he beat Cub Swanson, Hatsu Hioki, almost MDK'd Eric Koch, lost to the champ by decision, and then beat a huge prospect. He's terrible. He's gonna **** Bermudez up and people are gonna be like "Oh yeeeaah, him."
