Just before the start of the second round of the opening bout, the electricity at the High Desert Event Center went out, drawing boos from the crowd. But James Sears Jr. and Greg Harvey continued the action and fought to a draw.
The power was back on in time for the final three bouts of the evening.
The main event featured two High Desert residents, Jason McLaughlin from Phelan and Kenosha Saunders from Victorville. After a slow-paced first round, a bloody McLaughlin submitted after Saunders, who trains at Joe Stevenson’s Cobra Kai, applied a guillotine choke hold in the second round.
In front of his friends and family, Saunders (1-5) earned the first win of his amateur MMA career.
“It was amazing to finally get my first win in my hometown,” Saunders said. “I’ve been trying to get my first win for a while now, but I’ve finally overcome all the adversity. I finally have a full camp. I’m determined to turn pro soon and not give up.”
Another local fighter was victorious Saturday night. Apple Valley native Allen Debellis, who trains at Kahli Fighter Victorville, overcame a slow start to edge out a unanimous decision over Jonathan Sweitzer in a light heavyweight bout. Sweitzer took control of the action in the first round, but Debellis pressed the action to close the second round by landing flush punches in the final seconds. He continued to control the action in the final round, landing several overhand punches.
In other action, Antonio McKee Jr. applied a choke hold in the second round, forcing David Galindo to submit. Cameron Underhill cruised to a unanimous decision victory over Steve Garcia, and Tyler Mendoza was victorious after applying a rear naked choke hold on Raul Covarrubias in the first round. - See more at: http://www.vvdailypress.com/article/20140621/SPORTS/140629959/12987/NEWS#sthash.YyPniDxP.dpuf
