@P4p
No the fact Sanchez is better on top, off his back, in transition, at sweeps and submissions is why sanchesz is a better grappler. Gil is not better in every aspect. Stating such does not make it true. Gil however may be good enough to make the one advantage Sanchez does have irrelevant. That however does not in turn make Mel a better grappler. Think you misunderstand being better grappler with being more effective fighter. Mel TDD/skriking is likely to be more then enough to deal with sanchez. however you should not kid yourself that if they just grappled that Mel is by any means superior. Sanchez shows up with the right game plan this fight is a lot closer then you are making it out to be.

Franklin is making a solid point; in a pure ADCC-style jiu-jitsu match, Diego Sanchez is a top 5 grappler in the UFC's lightweight division,. It's not up for argument, that's just a fact.

Top 5 in a pure ADCC-style jiu-jitsu?

Mark Bocek
Fabricio Camoes
Cristiano Marcello
Leonardo Santos
Khabib Nurmagomedov
George Sotiropoulos
Rafael Dos Anjos
Benson Henderson
Joe Lauzon
Jim Miller
Gleison Tibau

maybe even
Nate Diaz
TJ Grant
Evan Dunham
Pat Healy

I don't think Diego ever submitted somebody in his 18 UFC fights, he was always a solid wrestler but there are much better pure BJJ guys everywhere you look in the UFC. ^^  and that's just the LW div. brah!

Jiu Jitsu isn't all about submitting guys. Both you guys have good arguments, personally i think Diego is a very good grappler. I think he does pretty well in grappling tourneys, i don't know a lot about how well he does though.

Considering that Diego Sanchez competed at ADCC and Grappler's Quest, which one of those fighters did that as well?

How about looking at this BJJ match between Diego Sanchez and Marcelo Garcia (a.k.a. one of if not the best grappler on planet ******' Earth) and then giving me your opinion?

Diego Sanchez did SIGNIFICANTLY better than most full-time BJJ guys. You think ************* Joe Lauzon would do that well? Please. (EDIT: Holy ****, I just realized that the finish was classic GSP/Matt Hughes 1...that's hilarious).

When I see that list, I think definitely Marcello, definitely Leo Santos, definitely Fabricio Camoes but when it comes to the rest, Sanchez has more accolades than all of those guys. His jiu-jitsu style has just not transitioned well into MMA, that's all.

Shame on you die for looking at the fighter's records and comparing submission wins between the fighters. Anyone can ******* count.

Marcelo Garcia tapped him! Not gonna change my opinion, Diego did good, his wreslting helped him, still tho? 31 year old Diego wouldn't last 3 min in that match...

You really don't know why Diego gets no love? Because he comes off as a pretty strange dude and it's debatable that he should be 0-6 in his last 6 fights.

@Franklin what's so funny? I'm pretty sure Benson would hold his own in a BJJ match...

I think Benson Henderson would hold his own in a BJJ match as well actually. Dude got invited to the 2013 ADCC for a reason.

Benson's got some sick BJJ. He just doesn't really use it which is a shame. Only real issue I think he has is that he goes for the guillotine when he shouldn't.

@buffalo ben

For someone who always corrects people here about their proper English/grammar, you obviously don't understand what debatable means.

While I felt that Diego won the fight 29-28, there are people who feel the 2nd round was closer... but that's fine, I'll say it's debatable that he is 1-5 in his last 6... because that makes it sound so much better.

I think it is funny because I do not think Benson is on the same level in terms of pure grappling. He is good but I think he is not as skilled and would lose in a jujitsu match. Also think he relies to much on his physical gifts. He would hold his own and not get submitted but he get out grappled. Also think he has pretty bad top control in comparison to many of the top LW grapplers. I think he has very good submission defense and has good take downs.  I think his skills are good for MMA but I do not think he would be on the winning end of a grappling match with Sanchez, but would pick him in a MMA fight.

I know this is a little off topic, but other than Diego Sanchez' awesome heart and fighting style, he has had some of the best drunk moments caught on film ever. So to celebrate his upcoming fight, the two best drunk Diego Sanchez moments.

Drunk at the MMA Awards acceptance speech (Video is a little small but this is the best one. Dan Henderson and Rashad Evans present the award lmao)

This is Diego Sanchez completely wasted on TUF 1 while Kenny Florian tries to calm him and and Josh Koscheck instigates

I just don't see anything that Sanchez can bring to the table against Melendez that tells me Sanchez could win. Both fighters are well-rounded, but it seems that Melendez is just a touch better than Sanchez in all facets of MMA.
