@ amp112 - Going down in weight doesn't always help a fighter. My belief is, if you don't have the skills at 170, you're not going to do much better at 155 if you don't improve on your skillset as a fighter. There are rare occassions where I think that moving weight classes is a better fit for a fighter. Like Michael Bisping, Demian Maia, Frankie Edgar, BJ Penn, Diego Sanchez, Clay Guida, and Demetrious Johnson going down a weight class makes sense. They were too small for the heavier weight class that they were fighting at before.
Often times I see a fighter cutting weight because they think that they will have a tremendous size advantage, and that will help them to further achieve their goals of becoming a champion or at least a top contender. Kenny Florian, Aaron Simpson, Joey Beltran, Rich Franklin, Anthony Johnson, Wilson Gouveia, Drew McFedries, Nate Marquardt, Tyson Griffin, Joe Stevenson, Travis Wiuff, Mark Coleman, and Kevin Randleman are examples of this.
More often than not changing weight classes, but not improving on their skillset as a fighter usually has adverse affects on a fighter's career with new obstacles that they didn't anticipate, which only makes their fights that much more difficult.
With all that said, I honestly have to admit that I felt that Roop cutting to 135 wasn't going to be a good fit for him. That he was another fighter cutting weight to have a considerable size advantage to make up for his lack of skill as a fighter. Also with that since he wasn't a top 10 fighter at 145, cutting weight to 135 still puts him in the same category. I can also admit that I was wrong about Roop cutting to 135. I agree that Roop is now a different fighter at 135. His win over Bowles definitely proved that, but for Bowles to not only fail the the drug screen with elevated testosterone levels, but to lose by getting KTFO'd to a fighter who wasn't a top 10 fighter along with failing the drug screen has to make him feel absolutely ashamed of himself.
If I were Roop, I'd feel damn proud of myself. Roop silenced the naysayers (such as myself), and defeated a top 5 135er on steroids by devastating KO.
