So, I thought it might serve a purpose to create a thread for all the other contributions to each other's lives that don't fit anywhere else.
Do you have something that would enrich the community culturally? Maybe dance, comedy, nutritional, inspirational, arresting visuals? But please let's keep this positive, and appropriate to the general public.
Maybe a video clip of a movie, broadway show, highly unusual, utterly creative, a cutting edge piece of information, a new computer application, or something that would make someone's life better or richer.

I admit, Santana put out some stinkers like Shango, but albums like Abraxas and his self-titled series more than make up for those.

Rembrandt: The Greatest Painter of Them All
His wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rembrandt
It is not easy to identify the greatest painter, there were so many. Something like who is your favorite classical music composer.
From among Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Rembrandt, Rubens, Raphael, Van Gough, El Greco, Turner, Gilbert Stuart, Renoir and others, it is so subjective and arbitrary.
But at the end of the day, I ask myself. If I had only one artist whose work I could see for the rest of my life, I'd have to select - Dutch master Rembrandt, 1606 - 1669.
Among all the masters who put oils on the canvass, he was unsurpassed. He wasalso just as amazing and famous for his etchings.

But there were other great painters, too!
Perhaps the closest runner-up Honorable Mention to Rembrandt might be the great British painter, J. M. W. Turner, 1775 - 1851, who seascapes were beyond descriptions.

New York City: A Unique Culture I Can't Stand Living Without!
So, I decided to write a love letter to my dear NYC. A Valentine, so to speak. How it is so unique and marvelous.
What other place in the world has so many famous places. Places made famous in film, books, magazines, etc. Just a few that come to mind.
Herald Square, Washington Square Park, Central Park, Greenwich Village, Times Square, Brooklyn Bridge, George Washington Bridge, Columbus Circle, The Bowery, Wall Street;
What other city has so many famous landmarks, tourist attractions, and specific places of fame?
Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Plaza Hotel, Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, Statler-Hilton Hotel, Hotel Pierre, Radio City Music Hall, Carnegie Hall, Mama Leone's, Luchow's, Museum of Modern Art, Guggunhime Museum, Madison Square Garden, Pennsylvania Station, Grand Central Station, St. Patrick's Cathedral, Chrysler Builder, Public Library, 5th Ave. & 42nd St. General Post Office, 34th st. 8th Ave., Apollo Theater, World Trade Center?, China Town, Woolworth Builder, Flatiron Building, Yankee Stadium, HS of Performing Arts, American Ballet Theater, New York City Ballet, Alvin Ailey Dance Company, New York Metropolitan, Paul Taylor Dance Company, Martha Graham Dance Company, Paul Sanasardo Dance Company, Julliard College of Performing Arts, City Center;
Just to put things in perspective, New York City has more lost landmarks than most cities have landmarks. original Waldorf-Astoria Hotel was demolished to make space for the present Empire State Building, Joffrey Ballet, located in
NYC from 1956, relocated to Chicago in 1995, Ebbets Field, home to the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1913 was demolished in 1960, The Polo Grounds, home to the New York Giants from 1911, was demolished in 1964, Trude Heller's night dance club closed in 1979, RiverBoat Restaurant, Gimbals, famous department store rival to Macy's, closed in 1987 after 100 years of business.
But NYC is so much more than all of the above. Some of my favorite things to do were to walk into a real NYC Jewish Deli and just stand there, breathing in and absorbing the great smells. A NY Jewish deli is one of the things I miss
most. They had everything you ever wanted to eat! Here are some of the things I most miss of those wonderful delicatessens.
Fried Jumbo shrimp, chopped liver, shrimp salad, chicken salad, tuna salad, various potato salads, various egg salads, rice pudding, tapioca pudding, bread pudding, salamis, brisket, hot corned beef, tongue, hard-boiled eggs,
lobster, crab cakes, southern fried chicken, pastrami, oysters, clams, scallops, artichokes, mushrooms; pickles, dolmas (stuffed g**** leaves), Reubens sandwiches, all sodas, juices, coffee, bagels, soft pretzels, various
cheeses, melted patties with cheeses, casseroles,
They had several jars of marinated things like artichokes, mushrooms, Brussels sprouts, olives, peppers, hearts of palm;
Almost as much as I miss those Jewish delis is Nathan's. Good old, Nathan's fast food chain. They had so many things. Burgers, hot dogs, fried shrimp, popcorn, french fries, pizza, fried onion rings, fish and chips, Philly
cheesesteaks, crispy fried chicken, etc.
Jewish delis and Nathan's! Two of the truly supreme good things that the mind of man was able to put together to keep the natives content.
I thought of the Stage Delicatessen Restaurant. 834 Seventh Avenue(between 54th & 55th St.), 1937 - November 29, 2012. It had a friendly rivalry with Carnegie Delicatessen Restaurant.
I thought of the Carnegie Delicatessen Restaurant. 854 7th Avenue (between 54th & 55th St.), 1937 - present. It is basically a Jewish deli and possibly the most famous deli in the US.
I remembered that NYC hosted Horn & Hardard automats. These cafeterias-styled luncheonettes featured prepared foods behind small glass windows and coin-operated slots. Lots of chrome added to their quaint charm.
One of its lost landmarks was the Jack Dempsey steakhouse, in Times Square. And Chock Full of Nuts eating places. And Orange Julius.
NYC also hosted Weiser Bookstore. It finally relocated to York, ME in the early 1980's. It specializes in New Age, Eastern Wisdoms, magic, mysticism, eastern religions and alternative spirituality, yoga, meditation. It was
located at 735 Broadway, near Astor Place, near Washington Square, in Greenwich Village.
NYC had Ray's Pizza (sometimes called 'Famous Ray's Pizza), which gained fame by piling cheese higher than any other pizza parlor. It was located on 11th street at the corner of 6th Avenue, in Greenwich Village. Closed October 30,
2011.
Brooklyn used to have a famous bookstore that specialized in baseball and sports, but I can't remember its name. Was it Manny's?
And so much more!
New York City! I miss you so! My heart aches for Paradise Lost. You haunt my dreams like the proverbial woman that got away! I will always be true to you in my fashion. Always true to you darling in my way!
Like the Neil Diamond song sings about.
LA's fine, sunshine most of the time,
The feeling is laid back
Palm trees grow and the rents are low,
But you know I keep thinking about Making my way back
Well, I'm New York City born and raised
But nowadays, I'm lost between two shores
LA's fine, but it ain't home
New York's home but it ain't mine no more.
But I got an emptiness deep inside
And I've tried but it won't let me go
I refuse to die in the Land of Sunshine.
I need to die where the cement grows.
East is east and west is west
And the wrong one I have chose
Don't bury me in this prairie
Take me where the cement grows
-------------------------------------------
I thought of more things that NYC has that, put with everything else, helps it to be the best place to live in the whole wide world!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benvenuto_Cellini
He was a goldsmith, scuptor and painter. He was Italian, naturally, and lived
1500 - 1571.
He was one of the Renasance's greatest creative, artistic geniuses.
His fantastic bejeweled masterpieces of gold and silver and gems are
unsurpassed, even today. He was an artistic genius who deserves to be
remembered, not forgotten in obscurity as he is today. His statues rival the
Statue of David by Michelangelo.

Bill's NYC post made me think of this rant by Edward Norton on Spike Lee's 'The 25th Hour'. It's pretty much the antithesis of what Bill is saying; a pretty hate-filled monologue, crapping on every citizen of NY, but I liked it.
Don't take it personal, it's just a movie, and if you think about it, the message is positive: you have only yourself to blame, it's no one else's fault.
If you find this offensive, let me know and I'll take it down, it is certainly not the purpose.
