I'm not going to sit here and tell you Severn was one of my favorite fighters, but you have to give respect to one of the forefathers of the sport and even if a high percentage of them were cans, I have nothing but awe for a 101-19-7 record and plugging on with training and actually getting in a cage with someone who wants to punch you in the face 'till the tender age of 54!!!!

That's 101(!!!) wins!! He did fight the best the sport had to offer for a large chunk of his career.

RESPECT!!!!

Severn was such a monster, when I first got into MMA Severn was one of my favorites. He was so fun to watch.

Agreed. He's as old school as you can get. 101-19-7 is an amazing record to retire on, Dan has had an amazing career. Respect.

Severn said in an interview earlier this year that 2012 would definitely be his last year competing in MMA. I remember that he sounded sincere, I'll try to find the video.

Easily the most well known and successful MMA fighter The Mitten has produced.  Much respect to Mr. Severn.

He fought around 20 decent fighters and big names at the time and around 105 absolute cans, i mean men who have zero business in the ring so he record is pure poop. He had a good record in the WWE i think.

Dan was also one of my favorite early stars, too.  He owned wins over Tank Abbott, Ken Shamrock, & Forrest Griffin (Forrest's 1st MMA fight, 2001).  He also lost to Royce Gracie, Ken Shamrock, Mark Coleman, Josh Barnett & Pedro Rizzo.  He drew with Kimo Leopoldo and Jeremy Horn and Pat Miletich.

Well, regardless of whether or not he beat up mostly cans in his career, there's no denying that Severn is one of the biggest and best stars that MMA has ever had.

The first ever MMA event I watched was UFC 5: Return of the Beast.  Though I didn't really catch onto the sport at the time, I would say Dan Severn was my first ever favorite fighter. It's worth noting that he was the first true wrestler of MMA and he definitely showcased how a good wrestling game can make you a dominate fighter.

He was the man and while I'm sad that he's done fighting, I'm happy he's had an incredible career!

This guys deserves nothing but respect, the guy had the balls to fight. He may have fought alot of no names, but I'd be willing to bet when Anderson Silva is 45+ he would either be retired or if for some reason still active he would be fighting nobodies. Severn stood the test of time, told Father Time to **** off and still stepped in a cage to fight much younger guys then him, and as you can tell by the record ... he beat damn near every one of them. Respect.

Also not to mention, he defines the term MMA Pioneer/Veteran/Legend. You hear those terms used so often in the sport, if any one deserves those titles its 'The Beast', Dan Severn.

Its unfortunate that MMA didnt come around until Severn was past his prime, so what if he mostly fought cans? He was a pioneer of the sport and fought almost into his 60's

There has been a lot of talk as to what age a fighter should retire.  The fact that Dan held his own to the age of 54 is incredible. I am amazed his body held up the way it had. Much respect indeed

Even though most of those wins are over considerably inferior competition, it still is pretty cool to have 100 wins

I remember years back that I met him at some sort of sports event, I don't remember if it was Boxing or a Toughman Contest. But i was still in single digits and I remembered how big he was. He was bigger than my dad at the time and I was really surprised by that, and don't get me started on the mustache. and Years later when I got into the sport MMA, my dad explained to me that it was in fact Dan Severn that I met. And needless to say I was astounded.
