Interestingly enough, it's Russia who leads the way in establishing MMA as a sport.

During a meeting of the Russian Ministry of Sport, an agreement was reached to include MMA on the National Sports Register...The MMA Union, headed by [Fedor Emelianenko], received a certificate of state registration...The declared objectives of the union are to develop, promote and organize MMA sporting events in Russia.
“Now that we have official status, the state will offer us support, as it does all other sports associations...We are planning to build a Martial Arts Academy and start developing youth sports...We are the first country in the world to recognize MMA as an official sport."

All this actually happened several weeks ago, but since then Russia hasn't wasted any time. At present, they are forging ahead with 5 major events--all to take place over the next two weeks.
12/2 PRO FC 44 - Rumble in Chekhov
12/8 M-1 Challenge 36 - Opposition in Mytishchi
12/15 Battle of Empires 2
12/15 PRO FC 45 - Thunder in Grozniy
12/16 Battle at Moscow 9 - Unstoppables
Not only will we see top Russian fighters in these events, but talent from across the globe. Names like Mike Hayes, Daniel Weichel, Andrei Arlovski, Kenny Garner, Boubacar Balde, Guram Gugenishvili, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, David Khachatryan, and Nills van Noord. It all boils down to a landmark step in the preservation and success of mixed martial arts, and we can only hope that other nations will follow the lead.

MMA was officially recognized as a sport when it became sanctioned under the state athletic commissions in the US.
