I was perusing around the internet, and I just so happen to find out that Xtreme Fighting Championships (which for some reason or another moved their operations down to Brazil and started doing fight cards down there) has set up a television deal with HBO (a la Strikeforce with Showtime).  As a result of this new deal XFC is going to come back into the United States and Canada in 2015, as well as potentially going into Europe.

Here is their site.

Apparently the deal was done last September, but I didn't hear much about this around that time.

Any thoughts on this guys?  Because I have no idea what to make of this.

XFC has put on some decent cards their last few times out. Interested in seeing what comes of this.

Sounds cool , only because I can use my cousins HBO to watch, otherwise booooo to PPV. If HBO does decide they like MMA content Vice is already a part of HBO they could start doing some cool Fightland videos

@curtwag84 I didn't know Vice was owned by HBO, that would be cool if they did something with Fightland.

Hopefully with HBO doing this Netflix will see the trend and get into MMA sometime in the near future.

@griffy , I dont think HBO owns them but Vice has a seasonal show that they give HBO exclusive content. All the cool stuff that Shane Smith does normally gets saved for HBO now.

Finally

Something to make the $500 a month I pay for HBO worthwhile.  Aside from GoT.

Did you see any news anywhere beyond the initial rumors back in September?  I never heard it back then but just googled and found a Sherdog thread.... not much else.

@Gregory I did some more digging, and apparently the new head of XFC made a brief announcement about it over social media.  He said that the deal currently applied only to HBO Latin America.  :(

But I wonder now that XFC is trying to break into the United States and Canada, if that deal will carry over to HBO Sports?

I think we'd hear a lot more about it if so.  From what I understood a few years ago, the head of HBO (or maybe it was HBO sports) was a real MMA hater.

Rather XFC stay in Brazil, they been putting on some of the best Brazilian events in the past year and in particular have done a lot for WMMA in the area. Much better than just becoming another US regional competing and putting on a very similar product as Legacy, RFA, etc

If I may present to you all a hypothetical related to the thread topic;  Let's say that HBO Sports was interested in promoting an MMA organization like an XFC, the same way that Showtime/CBS promoted Strikeforce and Elite XC respectively.  Do you think that HBO could have a chance to be successful in promoting an MMA organization and not have it conflict with HBO Boxing?  Also, do you think there would be a possibility that HBO could pull a Viacom and bankroll their MMA organization the way Viacom bankrolls Bellator?

And on their site is says, "at some point." So it's news when it happens for real, I guess. I'm doubtful that it's a legit partnership for live events.

@skelliher

But in all seriousness, it probably won't happen like you said.  HBO makes way too much money with Boxing and probably wouldn't consider taking a risk on trying to compete with the UFC, seeing how tough Showtime/CBS had it with Strikeforce and Elite XC.
