Recent developments have thrown this seething cauldron of talent into an even more frenzied state of wild, caotic pandamonim.
Jose Aldo is now calling out Anthony Pettis.
BJ Penn is fighting Frankie Edgar at 145! And the reports are that he is making the cut without problems! But we all know that BJ will end up back in 155, the scene of his most famous 'crimes'.
Eddie Alvarez beat Michael Chandler for the Bellator LW title. And now he will fight him for the 3rd time. After which, he will become a free agent, regardless if he wins or loses. So, I suspect he will come to the UFC sometime in mid-2014. And then we'll all see together just where he fits in.
Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrrone has announced his intentions to drop down to 145. Where he finds the extra 10 lbs. to shed defies understanding.
I find Khabib Nurmagomedov as exciting a force in LW as any and he is probably calling out everybody as we speak. Apparently, Gilbert Melendez wants to fight him and Khabib has created a online poster confirming his agreement. So, that will certainly become an intensely-bitter war. Good times are here, folks!
It doesn't get much more wildly fluid, chaotic & wide open as this. We're in the Wild West.

Recent developments have thrown this seething cauldron of talent into an even more frenzied state of wild, chaotic pandemonium.
Champ Anthony Pettis now requires surgery and is indisposed at the moment. He hopes to be ready to fight by summer. He recently gave an interview, following Nate Diaz' win over Gray Maynard. He said he'd like to fight Nate Diaz next. You'd think Nate would be happy to be offered a tittle shot?? Nate shoved the title shot offer hard up Anthony's ass. So much for Diaz' logic.
Anthony also showed interest in fight Jose Aldo. Looks like he want to be a true People's Champion.
Nate Diaz scored a decisive win over Gray Maynard, thereby propelling his name back into the Top 10.
It doesn't get much more wildly fluid, chaotic & wide open as this. We're in the Wild West.

This will be a great fight and determine just how superior quality Khabib really is. He was inching to get a Top 10 guy and they gave him the #3 man on the LW Totem Pole.
Great fight! Can hardly wait. Predicting Gil will have too much for Khabib. But should be fantastic fight nonetheless!

Since my last report, Joe Lauzon won a UD over Mac Danzig, Bobby Green won a UD over Pat Healy, Michael Johnson beat Gleison Tibau, Jim Miller submitted Fabricio Camoes.
Jose Aldo now says he will move up to LW someday.
Excellent fights are coming. Henderson / Thomson, Varner / Trujillo, dos Anjos / Khabilov, Pearson / Guillard, Sanchez / Jury.
This division will not be complete until BJ Penn returns.

And I thought Green's win over Healy was pretty decisive. That's why I dropped Healy from the top 10. I only put Dos Anjos in because of his wins but I thought he lost to Dunham and I don't trust the win over Cowboy due to his erratic performances over the last year. I fully expect Khabilov to dominate him and then be overrated himself. But I could be wrong so for now... :)
It's pretty clear when comparing our rankings that most of the top level is self-evident and they are close enough that there's really no wrong order between, for example: Melendez, Henderson, and Thomson & then Chandler and Alvarez with Khabib and Nate lower down. I rate Grant lower due to his inactivity and the luster of his win over Maynard being taken off. I think he'd be a terrible stylistic match for Nate as would Khabib. I wouldn't say Nate's ducking them so much as he understands he's at a disadvantage given the current rules and judging although his movement and wrestling do seem to be improving.
What's your opinion on Gaethje. I don't have him ranked currently but I have 36 fighters ranked and I'm pretty sure he could beat several of them. I'll be especially paying attention to his performance on Saturday.

01.17.2014 | 1:21 PM ET
The problem with Rankings is the subjective factor is about equal to the objective fight factor. So many fighters are inconsistent or have bad days. The least satisfying result for me is when a guy gets caught, the opponent swarms, and the guy on the ground is turtled up, protecting himself but unable to stop the momentum and gets waved out. Hate when that happens. Proves so much more when a guy either dominates or gets dominated the full fight.
I read that Nate Diaz' manager wanted to negotiate more money and the UFC said no. That's not ducking per se but I can't see where Nate would see the upside of fighting Khabib Nurmagovedov. Khabib is on a tear and the other guys don't want to be his stepping stone. Which is legitimate of course, but still, we would like to see those fights! The very last thing on this Earth that Nate wants is to be suplexed like he was by Rory MacDonald. It's that kind of imagery that the fans never forget.
I agree that Green won decisively over Healy. But I want to give Healy another chance. He's a tough man.
I never even heard of Gaethje. He's not on my radar yet but I'll look out for him. Thanks for the head's up.
I absolutely hate that Maynard lost 2 fights when's he SO PROVED his credentials earlier. I can't drop him that far. I really want to see him fight Henderson.
"Love God, live with honor, keep your agreements."
01.17.2014 | 1:34 PM ET
And as for Maynard, look at his so-called "proven" credentials. Record of 11-3-1. The draw & 1 of 3 losses to Edgar and even though he took the 1st fight, the obvious improvement of Frankie and non-improvement of Maynard make that a clear enough situation for me. Then you have Nate who he owns a very debatable decision win over but was KOed by most recently and was subbed on TUF. Grant swarmed and caught him. Who are his convincing wins? He laid on Florian because that's Kenny's biggest weakness and he was pot-shotting Huerta who exposed his chin 1st. Imo his most impressive win was his clear decision over Jim Miller whose own ranking isn't what it once was so I think Maynard is overrated because he's evolved at a slower pace than the MMA average. I think Maynard is a LW version of Kos and LW is significantly ahead of WW when it comes that evolution and I've always thought Kos was overrated.
Oh and I would LOVE to see Maynard/Bendo because I think Gray would be a stylistic nightmare for Bendo: better wrestler, maybe as athletic, and Ben doesn't have the power to take advantage of Gray's biggest weakness, his chin.
