Again!

A successful XFC event this weekend saw Springfield, MA hero 'Notorious' Nick Newell improve to 7-0 after a back and forth battle with Chris Coggins. Newell, who was born with a portion of his left arm missing, took up wrestling in school and later found his way to MMA thanks to a college roommate's obsession with 'Monday Night Raw' *cringe*. Feeling that he hadn't accomplished the goals of his wrestling days, Newell went full-on with MMA and eventually scored an opportunity with XFC.**

In the post-fight interview Saturday night, Newell made a couple admissions about the fight. He told the crowd that he went unconscious during one of the RNC attempts by Coggins, following up quickly with "Fortunately, the ref didn't notice." Newell then went on to admit that the 2nd round took a lot out of him, and that he "had to make the fight boring" in the final round in order to take a decision victory. When's the last time you heard that confession in the cage?

In all, one of the most amazing comebacks I've ever seen. If you didn't catch XFC 17 on the live stream--or even if you did--here's a brilliant collection of photos from the event...one of the best MMA photo series' I've ever seen. (ignoring the pink shorts)

I love Bellator, but Bjorn is really trying his damnedest to **** it all up.

RFA has Escudero and Tyson Griffin, outside of them, i'm not too sure.

All you doubters make me laugh.  This guy deserves all the credit in the world for his courage and perseverance.  I sincerely hope he rises to the top and makes you eat your words.

I don't want to sound rude or anything I just can't stand looking at amputees. I know there is a name for it but it escapes me right now. Its dont on a very high level but its there and so I don't watch this guy fight. I do have a question though and no one has been able to answer it. Why do they not cover up his numb? To me its like he gets to point people with a bon I don't understand that. They should have to cover it up with someone I would think in order to get sanctioned

Yeah, he has elbows and shins and most of the other usual human body parts.  He's just missing a hand and part of one arm.  I have to think every athletic commission that has licensed him has double-checked that it is safe for him to fight, and that no part of him is sharp and extra-dangerous to his opponent.

Newell would get downright exploited against a high level striker. Even if one shot is defended, he's just waiting to be destroyed. Circle to his left to avoid the right cross that could set up the shot, use the jab 'cause he can't counter it with his jab (since you know, he physically can't jab) and as long as your front leg is facing his front leg he won't be able to use the cross counter.

Imagine if Newell faced a southpaw, that would just be downright cruel.

So he has both elbows.......................... so not covering up his numb is like giving him 3 elbows. Cover it up, i say.

Also Dana is why out of line when asked about "signing the amputee nick newell". I saw what he said about an hour after he said it. Dana full out said no no no no. Turns out Dana doesnt know a single thing about him. not a damn thing. didnt even know how bad the amputee was. If thats not discrimination, i dont know what it.

I want Newell to get some good competition. He deserves it after running up a 10-0 record with 9 finishes in the 1st round. Having said that, I'm sure it's very difficult to get guys to agree to fight him b/c it's kind of a lose-lose when it comes to people's perceptions.

@JM Barrie You mean "nub" not "numb" right?

I agree with the idea of making him cover his nub with something. It has little fingers, you could get your eye poked out by that ****. Ain't nobody got time fo' dat.

Most fighters have little fingers at the end of their appendages, and most of them avoid poking their opponents' eyes in most fights.

Most fighters also have the ability to bend their fingers and make a fist.

@zarog

Wow, where did you unearth this thread? I would have forgotten I'd ever written it, although I'm still a big Newell fan. At first I was mostly a sentimental fan but he made a believer out of me. After that Coggins fight, Newell revolutionized his game and came back looking like he had 3 arms instead of one and a half. Anyway, thanks for the instant time warp.

@Lopati  Everyone Newell's defeated in XFC was .500 or better.

What would be so bad about letting him in a TUF, if the sanctioning committees were alright with it?

Throw him in the pool, and see if he can swim.  Water will seek its own level.  To hell with PR.  Women used to be banned in marathons.  'To protect them'.
