Alexander Volkov Wiki

Alexander Yevgenyevich "Drago" Volkov is a Russian Heavyweight mixed martial artist. Hailing from the Russian capitol, Moscow, he has competed professionally since 2009. Volkov is a black belt in Tsu Shin Gen Combat Karate, a brown belt in Kyokushin Karate, and a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He trains at Strela Team, although he experimented with high altitude training in the wilderness before his fight with Jairzinho Rozenstruik.

Volkov made his MMA debut in M-1 Global and would go 16-3 across multiple promotions in Russia. The most notable fights of Volkov's early MMA career are a submission loss to future UFC fighter and ARB Master of Sport Maxim Grishin (M-1 Selection 2010: Eastern Europe Finals) and a unanimous decision win over former UFC Heavyweight Champion Ricco Rodriguez (BF: Baltic Challenge 3).

In 2012, Volkov entered the Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix at Bellator 75. He defeated Brett Rogers by unanimous decision to advance to the semifinals. Volkov defeated Vinicius Queiroz by TKO later that year (Bellator 80) before capturing the Bellator Heavyweight Championship with a UD win over Rich Hale (Bellator 84). Volkov was TKO'd by fellow Russian Vitaly Minakov at Bellator 108, but he quickly re-claimed the Bellator Heavyweight Championship with consecutive finish victories over Mark Holata (Bellator 111), Might Mo (Bellator 116), and Blagoy Ivanov (Bellator 120). Volkov picked up a couple of wins outside of Bellator before losing back-to-back decisions to Tony Johnson (Bellator 136) and Chieck Kongo (Bellator 139). Volkov redeemed himself outside of Bellator by picking up the M-1 Global Heavyweight Championship with a submission victory over Denis Smoldarev (M-1 Challenge 64) and defending it against Atilla Vegh by KO (M-1 Challenge 68).

Volkov made his UFC debut on November 19, 2016 at UFC Fight Night: Mousasi vs. Hall 2. He defeated Timothy Johnson by split decision. Volkov proved that he belonged in the promotion with his next three victories, defeating UFC veterans Roy Nelson (UFC on Fox: Johnson vs. Reis), Stefan Struve (UFC Fight Night: Volkov vs. Struve), and former UFC Heavyweight Champion Fabricio Werdum (UFC Fight Night: Werdum vs. Volkov). Volkov's TKO win over Struve won him Fight of the Night Honors, while his KO victory over Werdum earned him Performance of the Night honors.

Volkov would next face Derrick "The Black Beast" Lewis on the main card of UFC 229. Volkov dominated Lewis for much of the fight before being caught with an overhand right and finished with ground and pound. Volkov has been 5-3 in the UFC since losing to Lewis. He has defeated Greg Hardy (UFC Fight Night: Magomedsharipov vs. Kattar) and Marcin Tybura (UFC 267) by unanimous decision and Walt Harris (UFC 254), Alistair Overeem (UFC Fight Night: Overeem vs. Volkov)(Performance of the Night), and Jairzinho Rozenstruik (UFC Fight Night: Volkov vs. Rozenstruik) by TKO. He has lost to Curtis Blaydes (UFC on ESPN: Blaydes vs. Volkov) and Cyril Gane (UFC Fight Night: Gane vs. Volkov) by unanimous decision and to Tom Aspinall by submission (UFC Fight Night: Volkov vs. Aspinall).

Volkov has a degree in Engineering from Bauman Moscow State Technical University. Volkov lives in Moscow with his wife and two children. In his limited free-time, Volkov enjoys Magic: The Gathering, chess, and computer games.
