In one of the most successful events in UFC history, featuring one of its most anticipated title matchups, Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar returned from an extended layoff after a life-threatening bout with diverticulitis to defend his belt over 2010’s July 4th weekend. Lesnar’s foe was undefeated power puncher Shane Carwin, one of the few men in the division as big as Lesnar and a man whom no one had managed to escape the first round against. After Carwin quickly knocked Lesnar down and blasted at him against the cage for most of the first round, Lesnar dramatically rallied in the second to secure the win by Arm Triangle Choke submission.
The event was one of the highest-drawing shows in MMA history, coming close to the record set by 2009’s UFC 100 broadcast. It was also among the most praised by everyone from Dana White on down, featuring fantastic bouts in virtually every affair and an unusual number of late-stage finishes.
