Mmm, I can't wait to see how many people get mad at this. I remember saying back when Khabib retired that Islam Makhachev would be champ really soon. People didn't believe me! What a better way to show that you're the best lightweight in the world than by dominating and subbing the greatest submission artist in lightweight history. It's not often you get some who makes Oliveira look lost on the ground (off his back no less), but Makhachev did it. God that squeeze looked like pure death, nobody's getting out of that if Islam clamps it on.

Now I know that it's technically the first standing arm triangle in UFC history (even though it isn't; shout out Matt Riddle), but is it just me or is this submission not all that memorable? Don't get me wrong, it's very impressive especially for a strawweight to pull off, but it still doesn't feel all that noteworthy. Maybe that's because of the lack of crowd noise. Skill level and rarity still elevates this sub pretty high though. It's probably gonna be a while before we see one of these again (if ever).

- Mitchell vs. Topuria
- Ilia Topuria | Submission | Round 2
- 2022 | UFC 282
-
Shout out to Ilia Topuria for being #3 on both my best subs AND best KOs lists for 2022. Guy got around this year, and while his fight with Jai Herbert was a masterful comeback, the Bryce Mitchell fight was an absolute clinic. Ilia took Bryce to school, both on the feet and the ground, and it was all punctuated by this arm triangle (maybe you can tell what my favorite submission move is by now after looking at this top 3). Special mention has to be given to Topuria pancaking Bryce before he locked this sub in; that was just pure disrespect.

So, yeah, it's a Bellator fight, but I'm putting in on here because I still can't figure out what the hell Po**** did here. It's not often we see a sub get created right in front of us, and with how weird this choke actually is, I don't think we'll ever see it again (though I said that about the Suloev stretch one time and now everybody's doing them). Congrats to Luca Po**** for now being immortalized with the "Lucanator Choke."
