Over 4 years after making his last title defense, a title he never lost and was forced to vacate because of one of the unluckiest string of injuries, Dominick Cruz finally gets the opportunity to regain his crown. His comeback fight and obliteration of Takeya Mizugaki in just a minute after nearly 3 years out of competition was already a huge challenge he passed with flying colors, one of the most stunning comebacks ever already, one that earned him a shot at the title. Sadly, injuries struck again... An other torn ACL, this time on the other leg could've been the final nail in the coffin. For him to rehabilitate once again and have to make another comeback, furthermore a title shot against a red hot TJ Dillashaw seemed ill-fated. But he was still given the opportunity he long awaited and rightfully deserved. Somehow, he came in as a slight underdog when him winning seemed quite unlikely. TJ had been on a roll lately, capturing the title from a seemingly unstoppable Renan Barao in overly impressive fashion and beating him again just as devastatingly. This gave this fight a rare dual feel as to whether we would witness a passing of the torch or a legendary, history making comeback. The fact remained it was still an exceptional and heated match-up between two fighters with some of the greatest footwork ever seen in MMA and quite the history behind. This was the continuation of the Cruz vs. team Alpha Male rivalry, TJ Dillashaw being Urijah's protΓ©gΓ© and having won the title while Cruz was sidelined, incorporating a very similar, heavy footwork oriented style to his game, a style Cruz felt he stole from him to win the title he never lost. All of this made for a fascinating match-up that would significantly elevate the winner on the all-time rankings, making it the biggest fight in the history of the division and for hardcore fans, quite simply one of the biggest fights ever. Ensued a fight for all the marvels. Far from the typical FOTY wars with two men hurting each other and getting pushed to their limits, engaging in crazy exchanges and everything... This was a game of chess played at the highest level with two guys trying to figure each other out, frustrating each other and having to adjust. Dom's footwork and head movement proved to be the deciding factor as he was excellent making TJ come forwards, put a lot of pressure and making him miss, having TJ becoming more flat footed and sneaking in some nice counters, mixing his wrestling well. TJ's low kicks really played a factor in the championship rounds but overall, this was a very close fight that could've gone either way. Cruz winning obviously added to the magic, completing the extraordinary comeback and regaining his throne 4 years since last defending it, making it one of the greatest and most satisfying moments in the history of the sport. ⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘ Cruz def. While Aldo vs. Hominick had a peculiar feel to it, the circumstances were much different. There was nothing personal between them, it was all about the competitive nature of the fight and how both the fight and the event were historic. This one between Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber... was personal, and just as historic for the division. It didn't have an hometown underdog looking to make history in front of the largest attendance in UFC history, but the heated build-up, the bad blood between the two and the stakes made for the biggest fight in the division's history up to this point, by far. Urijah Faber was responsible for handing a young and inexperienced Dominick Cruz the first and only loss of his career over 4 years prior in his WEC debut for his WEC Featherweight Championship. Cruz built himself back up after that loss and became one of the best fighters in the world, moving down, winning the WEC Bantamweight Championship, and later being promoted to UFC Bantamweight Champion following the WEC/UFC merger. With Faber moving down to bantamweight and setting his eyes on Dom's crown, this rematch for the first defense of his title was the perfect opportunity for him to avenge that loss and really solidify his status as the best bantamweight in the world. The tension was palpable and the two refusing to touch gloves only added to it. The fight proved to be much different than the first as expected with Cruz showing how far he got since, pushing the pace with his constant, unorthodox movement and his impressive and just as unorthodox output. Faber had a hard time figuring him out but whenever he caught him, it had impact. The two displayed phenomenal conditioning and athleticism, the wrestling and the scrambles were marvelous, Dom scored some brilliant, perfectly timed takedowns and showed outstanding takedown defense against a game veteran. The fight was just non-stop, back-and-forth, high-level action and it resulted in a very close fight. Even though Dominick ended up being a clear winner, Urijah did land the biggest shots of the fight and surely gave Dominick quite the challenge, producing this instant classic, which I, much like the aforementioned Aldo vs. Hominick fight, find criminally underrated. It's not a wild brawl or a bloody war with two guys just throwing down, getting badly hurt and everything many expect from an all-time great fight, but it's a formidably compelling and thrilling chess fight in which two fighters who don't like each other pushed one another and tried to prove who's the better fighter, not the toughest one, even tough both showed remarkable toughness and will in this fantastic battle that certainly had the crowd on the edge of their seats. ⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘ Cruz (c) def. Coming off a nearly 3-year layoff that forced him to vacate his title, Takeya Mizugaki was far from a tune-up fight. He was on a 5-fight win streak and many thought this would be too much too soon after such a long time away from competition. This represented a huge challenge, but a win over Mizugaki would immediately put him into title contention, so the risk was worth taking. And what a payoff this turned out to be. Cruz, a fighter often criticized for his lack of finishes, knocking out a guy who hadn't been finished by strikes in almost 8 years in just a minute after nearly 3 years away from the octagon. This was absolutely unexpected and made that comebacks even more stunning and remarkable, making a title shot and a dream match-up against TJ Dillashaw a no brainer. The first step towards an historic comeback was made, and the fact he would suffer another torn ACL and have to comeback again to win back the title only makes it more incredible. ⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘ Cruz def. The bantamweight GOAT vs. the flyweight GOAT. The thing is, this was before Demetrious Johnson solidified himself as such, back when there wasn't a flyweight division in the UFC. Anyway, this was still a very interesting fight that had hardcore fans excited. Dominick Cruz just avenged the only loss of his career in a classic against Urijah Faber in the first ever UFC bantamweight title fight while DJ was largely considered the fastest fighter in the world and a legitimate threat to Cruz' title. This resulted in a fast-paced marvel between two perfectly conditioned fighters in which the two operated at an impressive rate and speed. This was arguably the most movement and footwork ever seen in an MMA fight for 5 full rounds, even with the grappling, which was just as explosive. Dominick Cruz was the clear winner but DJ really presented a difficult challenge. This was the first time Cruz was not able to impose his footwork as DJ was constantly moving forward and not letting him impose it, plus Cruz broke his hand in the very first round, forcing him to adjust and use his grappling, which he did very well, scoring two gorgeous suplex and throws, taking DJ's back. DJ was never able to land anything significant, Cruz' defense mixed with the height and reach advantage gave DJ a real hard time. Obviously, DJ had quite the resurgence, moving down, becoming the first ever UFC Flyweight Champion and cementing himself as the GOAT of the division, breaking the record for most title defenses in UFC history while Cruz would fall victim to injuries that would take years of his career but elevate him as one of the most inspiring fighters ever by constantly coming back. ⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘ Cruz (c) def. This is the fight that sparked the Cruz vs. Alpha Male rivalry. Cruz was defeated by Faber, the team leader, back when he was just 21 years old. He failed a golden opportunity to become WEC Champion in his WEC debut, but this loss turned out to be a turning point for him as he rose back up to the top better than ever, becoming champion himself. His first fight against Benavidez was a nice preview of all that, but now, Cruz was the alpha, and Benavidez was eager to avenge the loss to Dom and bring that belt to team Alpha Male. He just won his last two fight in very impressive fashion, including one against former champ Miguel Torres. The two delivered a great, very fast-paced battle full of exciting scrambles, very good action on the feet, great display of cardio... It was close but Cruz certainly did enough to earn the decision against a gamed challenger who would eventually make a career out of missed opportunitie for the crown and become one of the greatest fighters to never be a world champion while Cruz would solidify himself as one of the all-time greats. ⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘ Cruz (c) def. The first and only time a UFC title was ever disputed on another promotion's card. So obviously, this was a pretty big fight, not as big as the main event between Benson Henderson and Anthony Pettis but still arguably the most important fight in the history of the division up to this point, even though fairly overshadowed by the main event, but still satisfying. Cruz scored a sweep, winning all 5 rounds, but Jorgensen was there and did some damage, Cruz was just too much. His constant movement and combinations, the pace he set and his ability to make the opponent chase him and miss made it hard for Jorgensen to keep up and outscore Cruz' overwhelming style. A great, dominant performance from Cruz, who cemented himself as one of the very best in the world and set up the biggest bantamweight fight in MMA history in his highly anticipated grudge fight against the only man to ever defeat him, Urijah Faber. ⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘⁘ Cruz (c) def.
