While the early prelims didn't contain any memorable fights, the prelims had Casey Kenney beat the overweight Manny Bermudez in satisfying fashion, Drakkar Close and Christos Giagos going to war, Cory Sandhagen staking his claim as a contender against Raphael Assuncao, and Khama Worthy pulling one of the biggest upsets of the year.
After a tease of a great fight gone sour in Derek Brunson and Ian Heinisch, Sodiq Yussuf went and shellacked Gabriel Benitez in a fight that I was expecting to be a grapplefest by Benitez. Next up, the (non)roid bowl kicked off with Paulo Costa and Yoel Romero giving a FOTY performance, effectively upstaging the FOTN performance of Klose and Giagos. This fight proved that Costa was more than just hype, and set up an exciting title tilt once he returns from injury.
In the co-main, Nate Diaz reminded us all why he is the man by putting on a dominant performance against a recently resurgent Anthony Pettis. While Pettis did everything in his power to make it competitive, Diaz's pressure and surprising top game were too much. After the fight, Diaz created a moment only he could create, resulting in an excellent event and fight noted later on this list.
In the main event, Stipe had the comeback of the year after being dominated by DC for the majority of three rounds. This fight had everything you could possibly want from a title fight from the rivalry to the comeback, culminating in one of the craziest title fights in recent memory and the best event of 2019.

- Holloway vs. Poirier 2

In spite of fun finishes by Brandon Davis, Khalid Taha, Alexandre Pantoja, and Nikki Thrillz and a dominant performance that (briefly) gave us hope of Khalil Rountree's career, this event is ranked so high purely by merit of the main and co-main. Dustin Poirier and Max Holloway delivered a fight that would be a fight of the year candidate any year, and somehow it felt like a comedown from the insanity that occurred prior in Adesanya Vs. Gastelum. More importantly, it sold me on Israel Adesanya as a real title challenger.

2 murders occurred at the expense of Luke Rockhold and Ben Askren, stars rose from the ashes in the form of Jorge Masvidal and Amanda Nunes, and Jon Jones almost got beat by a guy who tore his leg in half. What more could you ask for?

After a good round of early prelims that spawned a title challenger (read: sacrifice) for Valentina Schevchenko, and the bludgeoning of a young prospect at the hands of Lyman Good, the prelims decided to crank it up to 10. The following five fights all resulted in KO's or TKO's, and Johnny Walker's hype train was sacrificed in the name of creating two more hype trains in Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Edmen Shahbazyan, as well as resurrecting Kevin Lee's career. Two FOTN candidates followed in Lewis Vs. Ivanov and Thompson Vs. Luque to make violence lovers scream. A bathroom break was charitably given to us by Darren Till as he kept Kelvin Gastelum at range and further proved that weight cutting is ridiculous. Finally, Jorge Masvidal showed contrary to popular belief that he was a west coast gangster as he battered Nate Diaz for three rounds before the doctor came in and ruined our fun.

This card was forged in the fires of violence. Don't believe me? The main event was stopped because too much blood had been spilt. Holy crap, indeed.

UFC 239 wasn't the only event this year that featured a murder, as Schevchenko made sure of that. Henry Cejudo also proved that his wins against Dillashaw and Mighty Mouse weren't flukes (and then opened his mouth and made us wish they were). However, it was the bittersweet icing on the cake that made this event memorable as El Cucuy used his sharpened elbows to make Cowboy look like ET (although Sterling and Munhoz were robbed of FOTN as a result).

After a solidly unmemorable prelims (except for Garry Tonon who is something special), we were treated to one of the best main cards outside the UFC. After the brother of Stamp Fairtex (easier to write that than his first name) laid a whooping on his opponent, Timofey Nastyukhin made ONE pee themselves after handing out a nasty beating to their second biggest free agent acquisition. That same fear carried over into the first round of Mighty Mouse's ONE debut, but then he remembered he was Mighty Mouse. After a letdown of a rematch from Bibiano Fernandes and Kevin Belingnon, Aung La Nsang put Ken Hasegawa in his place. The next two fights were upset city as Xiong Jingnan beat Angela Lee in the female fight of the year, and Shinya Aoki showed he still has something left in the tank against Eduard Folayang.

If you aren't finishing, you aren't trying. That was the theme of this card, as only 5 of the 13 fights didn't end in a finish, 3 of which would be FOTN worthy on many fight cards, most notably the battle between Thiago Alves and Max Griffin (albeit Brazil gotta Brazil by giving the win to the Brazilian).

If you couldn't find satisfaction on this card, you're not an MMA fan. Cory Sandhagen and Alonzo Mennifield showed the makings of a star, and Geoff Neal put on an awesome scrap against Belal Muhammad. But we're just getting started as JoJo found a way to win (effectively making us all feel good), Cowboy shut up a mouthy up and comer (also awesome), PVZ won (could be a negative depending on how you feel about her, but as you can see I feel pretty good about her), Joseph Benavidez and Dustin Ortiz gave us another great scrap, Gregor Gillespie had another awkward post-victory interview. However, the best moments of this card were saved for last as Greg Hardy lost is embarrassing fashion, as did TJ (whom popped for EPO a couple months later, making his loss all the more sweet after threatening to shut down the flyweight division).

What happens when you put two guys who have a good ground game in the cage with each other? SLOPPY BOXING (cue the airhorns)!!! Not enough? How about a title upset, the women's GOAT showing why she is the GOAT, a close fight between a bantamweight great and a mini-featherweight great, an old man beating, and Geoff Neal and Matt Brown doing what they do best? That's what's up!
