^^Of course. But was that the type of bottom performance that pulls out the victory? At most, Cariaso almost had one omoplata after being on his back taking a decent amount, certainly not a deluge, of punches for three rounds. To be fair, just check the fight metric -- who landed more strikes in the fight? I'll even exclude the takedowns from consideration. Was it Cariaso?

Just checked fightmetric, and it was Cariaso by 9 strikes.

He was not only trying for submissions, he was throwing elbows and punches from the bottom. Plus he only let mizugaki get past his guard twice at most. Even then, it was just stalling except in the second round. Carioso showed how a good defensive bottom game should warrant a won round.

Ok -- I get your point. But according to fightmetic, Cariaso threw NINE more strikes than Mizugaki. Nine. Fine if those nine + an omoplata attempt were worth more than the 2 takedowns (fightmteric only counted 2 -- but let's say the sweep negated one of the 3 actual takedowns) and the strikes Mizugaki threw combined, but I just don't see it. Sorry, this is not a good example of winning a fight off of your back.

His omoplata wasn't a submission attempt, I looked at it more as an attempt to get away from the bottom.

Mizugaki won 29-28.

^^ most omoplatas end up in sweeps. They aren't usually successful at this level. Think someone just hit one in a fight this weekend, though.

@Blackwork yes he did, I believe the man's name was Krauss or something at Cage Warriors 46.

EDIT: It was Pavel Kusch vs Alex Starikov.

very lucky indeed. But after the first round, I did question how it would be scored because Cariaso had good strikes, damage, sub attempts and even control from the bottom. plus landed much bigger shots standing. So not that crazy of a call but a shocker for sure.

Regardless of the outcome, I enjoyed Cariaso's attempts to sweep/submit off his back. It was fun to watch.

I am really surprised Cariaso got the decision. Not upset, because I was hoping he would, just surprised. Wish I had gone with my heart on this one.

I had it 30-27 Mizugaki. This was the only fight on the card that the judges and I disagreed.

I wouldnt say bad decision but definitely different from how they usually score bouts. Cariaso got the better of the standup, clinch, and ground. All Mizugaki had was takedowns and a little ground and pound. Cariaso was active off of his back neutralizing Mizugaki's attack, landing strikes, attempting submissions, and constantly working for the sweep. With that said I could see this fight going either way or even being a draw.

I think Mizugaki's complacency on the ground lost him the fight. I personally thought he won 29-28, and I was upset the judges gave it to Cariaso, but he was working the whole time and almost caught Mizugaki in two submissions. Good for Cariaso, but I think Mizugaki had a bad night. He seemed so surprised when the judges gave the decision to Cariaso, but whatever. I'm a fan of Mizugaki, but I can see why the judges gave it to Cariaso.

Mizugaki didn't lose the "fight". He was awarded less points by 3 people for an arbitrary reason.

What pisses me off is they gave the decision to Cariaso for being more active regardless of being the fighter on the bottom yet when Pettis fought Guida they gave Guida the nod even though Pettis from what I remember was the much more active fighter! Same with Miguel Torres when he fought MM ! A little bit of consistency would be nice....
