As for the episode, I thought it was a strong start to the season. I'm interested to see how the pacing is with this season, since there are a total of 13 episodes compared to Season 1's 6 episodes.
I really like Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes. I think he looks the part and for the most part his acting is on point, but there have been a few times throughout the series, the opening to this episode being one of them, where he comes off a little hammy and where the Southern accent just doesn't sound convincing. Lincoln is British. For the most part, I thought the performances were great, especially Norman Reedus as Daryl (quickly turning into my favorite character) and an improved Laurie Holden as Andrea. I thought she was very weak in the first season.
Jon Bernthal was strong as always as Shane, one of the better characters, and Sarah Wayne Callies was less hatable as Lori Grimes.

from Wikipedia
"After the first seven episodes air, the series will go on hiatus, and then return on February 12, 2012, where the final six episodes of the season will begin airing"
so AMC will have Walking Dead and Hell on Wheels air on the same day for 4 weeks...sundays are brutal for tv

@Swick: I hadn't heard about King writing episodes of the series, and I'm not inclined to believe it unless I see some rock-solid evidence, which I'm too lazy to look up myself. I wouldn't be too shocked, however, as he has a great creative relationship with former Walking Dead Executive Producer and Director Frank Darabont. Now that Darabont's out of the picture, I don't see King getting involved if he hasn't already.
