If there is a definitive timetable for the champion's return, there will not be an interim title. Cain's shoulder injury had a known timetable for recovery.
As compared to Brock Lesnar - when he first was diagnosed with diverticulitis they didn't know if he would ever fight again.

Looks to me that Rashad has earned his shot at the belt and Machida just got lucky of the timing of Rashad's injury
