Hopefully as more current MMA fighters retire they'll make the same move as Big Dog and the judging will improve over time!

Bellator 44 is in NJ I think... If not 44, one of the May ones. I hope so too SoccerKick. That may be the only way the judging does improve... for the time being.

Good for Ricardo, I hope he does a good job when it comes to judging. He should do a lot better than most because he has actually competed. One think I don't think judges do enough is give out 10-10 rounds when a round is extremely close so a judge just picks someone randomly or relies on one takedown at the end. Hopefully in the future more retired fighters will turn to judging pro MMA.

@thiagosilva.. I'm not sure once someone is "hired" as a judge, the type of training/courses you have to take to be deamed "qualified" to judge. I wonder the same... anyone know if whatever it is he has to go through will allow him to be ready for May?

this is nothing but good news for the sport, we often forget how young mma is, but with the outflux of retiring vets, we will see more ex fighters taking up important roles as judges and refs. We just need to get this damn scoring system worked out for the unified rules!

I do see problems of conflict of interest especially in New Jersey where he has a school. Of course he won't be assigned to any fighter he has an affiliation with but it does open a chance for bias towards BJJ with him being a specialist. We'll see how he does, it takes a while to judge big fights you have to go through a process and work up to major fights.

I disagree Bigj, I think he would be more concerned with doing a good job and keeping his reputation. Just because he does BJJ won't make him biased either, other judges have martial arts backgrounds as well. If anything I think because of his background in MMA he could become one of the better judges in America.

It's just a question that one has to think about. But it will be a while before he judges any major fight. I don't think he will do anything he doesn't think is right, It won't be an integrity question. I think a lot of people let their personal bias get in the way of how they see the fight even if it's on a subconscious level.

Judging bias is an interesting question. A BJJ guy might also not reward as much for top-control by a wrestler... which could arguably be a good thing. All the judges with boxing backgrounds would arguably have the opposite bias, so you're probably facing this issue either way.
