I think we all have been noticing the bad results (e.g. UFC 144) of asian fighters...

In the last 20 fights - they have a record of 6/14

What do you think are the reasons...

Yeah, I'd have assumed that considering them to be Arabic would be accurate enough. lol obviously this is not my area of expertise though. I've always admired Arabs as fighters though, they seem to have a whole lot of fight in them.

Well he's Asian and it's not like he's doing good either so might as well throw him in the pile right?

Manny trains in Los Angeles...I'd say to make this a better discussion keep it to guys that train in Japan or Asia and not Asian fighters that actually have moved or train in the US

Expectation. So many styles originate from Asia as well as it being home to Pride, its built up a very high expectation in terms of MMA. Also, fighting in a cage adds a whole new dimension that many Asian fighters dont experience while in a ring. Its probably more coincidence than anything and who knows, in ten years we could be looking at 6/7 Asian champs with no Brazilians or Americans anywhere. Thats MMA for you.

I'd say it should be more of an ethnicity thing.

Those of you not considering Shalorus or Gamburyan Asian should change your definition to East Asian or Far East Asian then.

I don't think you were being rude brad. It's a good point of conversation. I was just pointing out that Asia's a continent not an ethnic group. Maybe someone should ask someone from the areas under discussion and get their viewpoint.

Baroni has a good point about the jet lag.  My personal experience suggests those fighters should be getting to the event site 10 to 14 days in advance.  Jet lag always hit me real hard coming from Japan.  Going to Japan, OTOH, it would only take me 3 or 4 days to get over my jet lag.  I think a lot of that might have to do with the timing of the flights to and from East Asia, because Aussie/NZ fighters don't seem to experience the same difficulty.

Also, as someone said earlier, lack of quality opposition in that part of the world hurts, as well as the fact that they usually fight in a ring and not a cage.  And from my own experience having trained both in Japan and here in the US, I would say that training in Japan tends to be less instructional and more you learning by sparring with others until you've been around training for a while.  Basically, you either sink or swim.  Here I find it to be more of the opposite, where beginners are given a lot of attention when it comes to instruction, while more advanced practitioners not as much.

Lol, whens the last time you people picked up a geography book? For some reason, "asian fighters" denote purely orient people, even though people like Manny Gamburyan are asian fighters.

Pour on the downs, you trollops.

@Nik, Manny trains out of LA.  I think the issue is fighters who are based in on the other side of the world, regardless of what they look like.

the relevant question is obviously why japanese fighters like gomi are struggling in the ufc, not kamal shalorus and iran.

hey guess what, russia is also part of asia, is this thread about how those guys are doing in the UFC?

I think Manny Gamburyan would beat the **** out of the person who asks him that, before making a bunch of comments about that person's mother. He's Armenian after all.

The whole point of this thread is about the Oriental fighters, not Fedor Emelianenko.

Yes, technically Armenians and Iranians are Asians, but what does THAT HAVE TO DO WITH ANYTHING?!

This thread's about Oriental fighters, the term Asian is the more common term but some uptight *********s on this forum seem to try and find faults in every ******* sentence.
