UFC 279 Thoughts
I love this matchup. Think it spends most of the time on the feet which will be a treat to watch. Holland will have size and reach advantages and offensively has great speed and power. Defensively, he does leave a lot of openings to be countered and with a technical striker like D-Rod I expect him to find a lot of opportunity. Holland does over extend on shots alot and I think D-Rod's boxing combos in the pocket will be very effective. In saying that, Holland could bounce around for 15 as well and just land the more substantial shots but he is a showman and will want to engage wildly. Short notice and after a long lay-off is a worry for D-Rod. Close fight here. Betting wise - Dog or Pass IMO but really can't wait to see this.
Tony Ferguson vs Li Jingliang
Ferguson has the most mis-managed career in history. I actually like the move up in weight class if I am honest, it's overdue but why against a guy with little name value and a hard hitter in Li. Ferguson has to employ his wrestling game here even if it is just to get in the head of Li and make him think there is that avenue available. Li is quick and very reactive, using a lot of feints and fast twitch movements to close distance. He throws hooks WILDLY with a lot of power and if one connects I think it shuts the lights off. I can't really bear to see another legend go down badly, hoping for a Tony win but I don't know how you can confidently pick and/or bet Tony after coming back so quickly after that KO. Li wins, hopefully with little damage given....
Khamzat Chimaev vs Nate Diaz
Khamzat's wrestling is technically superb - he has beautiful timing on his double's and single's but he also has the Dagestani style of employing body weight trips and throws when manoeuvring the opponent off balance against the cage. This + his size and strength for the division makes him a huge worry. His striking is serviceable and has decent power but very privy to overextend but to be fair, this generally works as he uses it to close distance. Simply put, how does Nate stop the forward pressure. He doesn't have near enough power to make Khamzat respect him and nowhere near enough strength to negate the wrestling. Khamzat should take this down early and I expect Nate to really struggle to get up. Nate's jiu jitsu is solid as we all know, I expect Khamzat to get the Dagestani handcuff and use his ground and pound to open the scar tissue and force the referee to step in early. Khamzat via TKO RD 2.

Johnny Walker, TKO, R1
I'm more picking who I'd like to see win here rather than who I think will win. I don't do it often but with these two, it's not an easy call regardless. So I might as well.

Danyelle Wolf, TKO, R3
Nothing against Norma.. she's a damn good fighter and knows how to put on a hell of a fight and she very well might even win this. But if you follow Boxing at all like I do you would know Danyelle is a hell of a Striker and was 30-14 in Boxing. Granted that was 3 years ago and yes I know, "this is MMA, not Boxing. Blah blah blah" however, to me the stand up and agility part are a couple of the easiest parts of the transition over. Norma is solid on the ground, has s couple submission wins, but she's not great, although this could be the difference maker. I see a upset. I'm hoping for a upset for Danyelle just 5 days after her 39th birthday, and this could potentially be a hidden gem on this card.. it's about time Danyelle ever made her debut. But i wouldn't be surprised this fight going Normas way either and her putting Wolf away quick.. I just don't see it happening myself.

Jake Collier, SUB, R2
As much as I would love to see Chris Barnett win and if he does I will be very happy about it and won't care if I pick this wrong... I gotta be realistic every now and then. Barnett looked sloppy as all hell against Martin Buday his last time out, and he definitely showed that he really needs to work on his Stamina and his ground game (at least the basics man, come on) which I hope he has worked on coming into this fight. Collier has no problem winning on the ground or stand up, and he also has the stamina to make it through a decision and not be completely gassed by the end of the first round. Unless Beast Boy gets a lucky KO punch or brings out some new tricks I just think Jake can win this fight in too many different ways and he's gonna take advantage of a few of them.

Jamie Pickett, DEC
These guys are both Strikers and this could just be a downright swinging contest however I think Pickett has a bit more in his arsenal to use then Denis does. That 80 inch reach too is scary although Denis a bit luckier then some and only three inches less then Jamie. I hope to see a good fight, maybe even a potential FOTN or KOTN.. but Jamie could also just swing a quick easy win or vice versa.

Jailton Almeida, DEC
I don't know man.. I've heard a lot of good things about Anton even before the Contender Series fight. He's a phenomenal grappler (so is Jailton) and this fight honestly could be definitely FOTN potential, or it could be really boring.. I don't see it any other way.

It's wild to me that the UFC refuse to match Nate & Tony. They're both at the back end of their prime; legends within the sport; renowned for their pressure, toughness & cardio; tall, skinny Lightweights who are better suited to Welterweight... But nahh lets feed them to jacked, hungry Welterweights who wouldn't look out of place at Middleweight and sell the fans some wolf tickets instead.
