UFC 280 Oliveira vs Makhachev - Predictions, Fight Analysis and Betting Tips (UFC 280 Preview)
Holy **** - I am so excited for this card. We are also doing a giveaway, all you have to do is comment the number of significant strikes in the main event and who you think will win, closest to the number wins $50 AUD! We broke down the whole main card, a few of my thoughts below...
Chookagian vs Fiorot:
Close fight, I think this will come down to Fiorot landing more damage vs Chook landing more volume. Fiorot is good moving backwards and forwards but prefer her moving forward. Chook has underrated grappling but I expect Fiorot's strength to help negate this. Don't hate the shot on Chook given her high level of competition. Probably a Split Decision incoming - taking Fiorot via SD.
Gamrot vs Dariush:
I like Gamrot's technicality on the feet more than Dariush. We should see some elite scrambles. Again, another close fight on paper - I like the consistency of Gamrot and the fact he is getting better every time we see him. Dariush is good, underrated but his striking can be very stiff and his head staying on centre line worries me. In a fight where both are good grapplers and have a strong wrestling base, going to side with the better striker. Taking Gamrot via UD.
Yan vs O'Malley:
O'Malley is probably one of the most comfortable fighters who can fight off the back foot. Very good at sticking and moving, varying his strikes and staying on the outside. Step up in competition is worrying. I think Yan needs to pick up the pace he usually fights at given this is 3 rounds. Yan's ability to switch stance mid combo will help him close distance easier and his ability to punish fighters with kicks when they attempt to circle out and re-engage will win this fight. O'Malley is good and could steal this with early volume, think it might be a year or two too early and Yan's win over Sandhagen will help him here. Yan via UD.
Sterling vs Dillashaw:
Say what you want about TJ, the guy is a ******* DOG. He is very mentally tough, durable and if you want a dog who will fight for your money - it's this guy. Light footwork, intricate angles and awkward strikes allow him to catch alot of guys off guard. Sterling's striking on the feet is pretty underrated, he is very good at circling away, waiting for you to plant and then launching into combos. I really like his variety of kicks. Sterling's head movement has improved massively, far more intelligent than it used to be when he would dip down into knee territory.... TJ is a solid wrestler and Sterling's shots aren't great technically. Sterling is in crazy good shape for this one, that neck surgery has really come good for him now. TJ is coming off ACL surgery and I don't think it's rude to say, out of his prime. In his prime, I would pick TJ. There were a few scrambles in the Sandhagen fight that are pretty worrying as a viewer, if he gets into situations like that with Aljo, it's going to be a different story. Taking Aljamain Sterling via Sub RD 4.
Oliveira vs Makhachev:
No matter what side you pick, you're going to piss people off here. I don't want Dagestani's to dox me.... inshallah brothers. Banger fight, going to leave the breakdown for the video but it is probably one of our best. Spent hours and hours watching tape on both guys and still struggled to split them. Cannot wait for this.

On the other hand, I also dont see Dariush wanting anything else than title shot, would he agree to fight Dustin or Michael, and would they agree for not a money fight against Dariush?

Charles Oliveira, TKO, R2
The champion has a name. Islam is good don't get it twisted but Charlie Olives is that guy. He's the man at lightweight. I cannot stress this enough ISLAM IS NOT KHABIB. Khabib was a pressure fighter while Islam stays on the backfoot. Khabib primarily boxed on the feet and islam kicks.Islam waits and hunts subs while Khabib beats the sub out of you. Khabib had an iron jaw and Islam gets dropped by jabs. There are many differences between there game even if they look similar and both maintain high level Dagestani wrestling. But that may all be for nought as his hardest tests were BJJ fighter i.e Adriano Martins, Davi Ramos, Thiago Moises. Oliviera has arguably the best BJJ ever in the UFC and has extremely polished and dangerous muay thai and clinch work. I see it messy for Islam in the clinch and on the feet at all times. Chandler, Justin, Dustin all met Charles head on and dropped him. Islam will not. He will be on the backfoot unlike khabin. He will allow Charles to pressure him inorder to find a takedown which may work but then you're dealing with the #1 submission guy ever. On the feet hes too much and on the ground too dangerous. Oliveira 2nd rd tko borderline ko Olives batters Islam on the feet in the first Islam gets a takedown Charlie threatens w some heat from the guard and gets his way back up where he catches Islam shooting with a big knee and finishes w big gnp bouncing his head off the mat.
Sterling vs. Dillashaw
T.J. Dillashaw, TKO, R5
This is a hard one. TJ is sleeping on Aljos striking and i really could see Aljo koing TJ hes got creative striking and throws some crazy ****. That being said I favor TJ almost everywhere here. He proved he could still take massive shots in his fight with Cory so i'm not too worried about the chin although Aljo could still definitley ko him. I see Aljo struggling for takedowns alot more than either of the Yan fights. I do worry TJ will be too complacent on the ground w Aljo and Aljo can and will sub him. His BJJ is too slick to even risk that. TJ i see chopping those legs early and often and finding more and more hands on Aljo the more Sterling gasses. TJ's been known to finish fights in the 5th so ill pick it rock w a headkick and finish with punches OG Killashaw style. Daddys Home *******
Yan vs. O'Malley
Petr Yan, DEC
This is closer than anyone is giving it praise for based on styles alone. Petr often loses the first and Omalley often excells in the first coming in extremely switched on. Most people agree that Sean wins the first and I also agree. Hes gonna be too long and sharp for Petr early and i could even see him rocking Petr early and badly with something devastating however i see yan picking it up drastically and winning the 2nd at the end of it with some kicks grappling and landing the bigger shots which sets up Petr dominating the 3rd. I believe it will be competitive the whole way through and i dont think sean will lose any stock. Yan is gonna deliver a textbook Yan performance but Omalley is gonna prove how good his striking is when he dominates the first and a good part of the second. But Yan is just that ****** guy 29-28 Yan
Dariush vs. Gamrot
Mateusz Gamrot, TKO, R3
Old guard vs new guard sorta? Bennys been around for a minute and he's looking older and greyer by the day while only being 33. His hands aren't bad but they lack the swiftness and technique of Gamrots punches. Gamrot has paved his way outside of the ufc winning 145 and 155 titles in KSW. Idk if he could still move down to 45 thats something to think about later maybe if he loses. The wrestling of Gamrot neutralizes most of what benny tries and will often leave Gamrot on top being the winner of rounds. Later in the fight i can see Dariush wanting to stay on the feet w gamrot after getting outgrappled and he seem to be doing alright until Gamrot lands a big 1 2 down the middle and drops beneil and finishes with gnp. Gamrot 3rd rd tko
Chookagian vs. Fiorot
Manon Fiorot, TKO, R2
Fiorot is the next title challenger. I believe if Jennifer Maia is any less tough Fiorot finishes that fight. Chook is a legit test and has proven herself to be better than the rest of the flyweights but the new wave is coming and Fiorot is better in every real. I see that sidekick landing often to the body head and legs of chookagian. Im prolly gonna go with a body shot ko either a side kick or roundhouse kick to the liver gets the job done for the french women in the 2nd. Fiorot 2nd rd tko
Muhammad vs. Brady
Belal Muhammad, DEC
I cant be the only one who's been ridiculously unimpressed by Sean Brady. Genuinely i think he loses to everyone in the top 10 outside of wonderboy and street judas. Hes got good BJJ but thats it. No striking no cardio and his nose seems to break everytime hes hit in it. If you gas against Chiesa dare I say Belal has finishing potential here. I see the grappling evening out and Belal having the standup advantage but more than anything just being able to push and break Brady. I see Brady getting swallowed by Belals pace and in the third Belal actually looks like he might finish a gassed out Brady but he wont because Belal simply does not know how to finish. 29-27 Belal. Brady takes the first with bigger shots and prolly wobbles Belal but Belal takes over from there with a near 10-8 in the 3rd.
Muradov vs. Borralho
Caio Borralho, SUB, R1
If GM3 can do it so can Caio. Muradov will be forever dangerous with his boxing but his grappling was exposed and GM3 even struck with him and did well weirdly. Caio Borralho is the future hes just too good and the stats lie about his height he is a big dude. I see him entering the grappling realm quickly after a few jabs and oblique kicks and subbing and making quick work of Muradov. Give Muradov a striker so we can get a banger of a standup war next time im feeling bruno silva. But right now Caio dominates. 1st rd rnc Borralho
Oezdemir vs. Krylov
Nikita Krylov, TKO, R2
Krylov is younger and I feel overall better at this point in there careers. Krylov is young and hes a veteran been in the UFC for a very long time even fighting at heavyweight. Craig subbed him i get it but krylov was winning everything about that fight. Dare I say it Craig was outstriking oezdemir in the 2nd round. Craig was kicking him up and a guy with as powerful and disciplined kicks as Krylov this will go badly. Volkan parries alot as well so you know what that means. 2nd rd brutal head kick ko for Krylov
Tukhugov vs. Almeida
Zubaira Tukhugov, DEC
I want and could see Almeida getting it done with some craziness but i dont think it happens. Zubaira dealt with a similar style recently with Ricardo Ramos who he was able to beat quite handidly and i think this will be similar. I see Zubaira getting takedowns and even landing good shots on the feet. Almeida by ko is a nice prop but I do believe Zubaira to be the only winner out of that team this weekend. Tukhugov 29-28 Almeida gets crazy and takes a round
Nishikawa vs. Mustafaev
Magomed Mustafaev, TKO, R1
I don't know anyone who's picking Nishikawa and there's good reason for that. Despite only being 19 Nishikawa has a lot of experience but hes also been tkod and taken some damage. Jumping into the deep end with a guy like Mustafaev is bad for your health. He koed Fiziev in the first and I have no doubt he does the same to this poor kid. He is a good prospect but i see very little Mustafaev needs to worry about. Mustafaev 1st rd overhand tko
Nurmagomedov vs. Omargadzhiev
Gadzhi Omargadzhiev, SUB, R2
I understand his last name is Nurmagomedov but name another member of the family that got subbed by David Zawada cuz i cant. Gadzhi is better on the ground than Zawada and hes bigger aswell. Abubakr has nice boxing but it wont be enough hes simply not built the same as his cousins. Gadzhi 2nd rd rnc after a bit of a scrap but Gadzhi proves whos stronger and the better grappler
Petrosyan vs. Dobson
Armen Petrosyan, DEC
Petrosyan is the better striker and this is a striking fight. Dobsons a powerful brawler fighting a technical kickboxer. Dobson can find the ko shot and Armen has been koed before but i dont see it. Petrosyan looked great against Robocop which has aged greatly since the fight. i dont have too much to say i just see Armen chopping at the legs w kicks and eventually slamming some to the body and winning 30-27.
Mokaev vs. Gordon
Muhammad Mokaev, DEC
Gordon does have a weak chin and I almost picked Mokaev by ko because of it but i find much more likely that Mokaev dominates on the ground although Gordon is a decent grappler himself but not on Mokaevs level. I see it being boring like the Charles Johnson fight. 30-27 Mokaev
Länsberg vs. Rosa
Karol Rosa, DEC
Womens MMA so no finishes. Lansberg proved scrappy and durable in her last fight against Kianzid but Karol Rose is better and younger simply put she wins wherever it goes. 30-27 Rosa

Like if Charles gets through Islam I'll be fairly confident he beats Volk (even now I think Oliveira wins, but there are some doubts in my mind), but maaaaan idk how I feel about him going to yet ANOTHER person's hometown when there's a card in his country a month before. Like I said, if he beats Islam, I think he'll beat Volk even easier so it's not like he's gonna lose in enemy territory, but still. He's the champ, he shouldn't have to keep going into other people's backyards.
Also it would probably make the Aussie fans sad to see their champ lose

Yair vs Emmet for an interim title (Yair wins imo)
Allen/Kattar winner vs Mitchell/Topuria winner for n1 contender spot (Leaning Topuria vs Kattar, which I think Topuria wins)
Evloev vs loser of either of those fights (Arnold Allen for example) or you could punish him for maybe almost ruining a card and make him fight the toughest lowest ranked guy in the division, but tbh idk if a guy like that exists that could beat Movsar, and you don't wanna reward him by giving him Holloway or some ****. Maybe do that for a MAx rebound victory, test out his wrestling, idk.
That way you have the next 2 contenders set in stone (possibly 3 if Movsar wins) and you get the division moving
