It appears as though Phil Davis is on the verge of signing with Bellator MMA.

According to sources close to the situation, Davis, 30, is very close to inking a new multi-fight contract with the promotion, and the deal could be officially announced as soon as Wednesday.

Davis, whose UFC contract expired after his January loss to Ryan Bader at UFC on FOX 14, has a 13-3 (1 NC) record. He started his career an impressive 9-0 before losing to Rashad Evans at UFC on FOX 2 in January 2012. "Mr. Wonderful" holds notable wins in the UFC over Alexander Gustafsson, Brian Stann, Tim Boetsch, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Lyoto Machida and Glover Teixeira. He is currently ranked no. 7 in the UFC's light-heavyweight rankings.

MMA Sun first tweeted about the possibility of the signing last week.

A four-time NCAA Division I All-American wrestler at Penn State University, Davis is managed by Zinkin Entertainment, who's long had a great working relationship with Bellator president Scott Coker.

No word just yet on when Davis is currently scheduled to debut for the organization or against who.

Thoughts?

Personally, I say "Good job, Bellator" with this if it goes through.

It's good for Bellator, not so great for Davis...

@shot2thesac I might flip that statement.  It's good for Davis in that he will now likely be the poster boy for Bellator and be in a title bout within a fight if not immediately.  Bellator will obviously have to pay him more than UFC is willing to in order to get him. But this could be the same situation Strikeforce had with Dan Henderson, overestimating a top ranked UFC fighter's drawing power. They may wind up with a high dollar fighter that can't draw any better than fighters they already have and one who is a real danger to their much more exciting champion Liam McGeary.

I find this stupid as ****. Davis is still relatively young, there aren't many top tier LHWs in the world, and he wants to sign a contract with Bellator? Yeah, enjoy yourself Phil.

This is good for everyone in my opinion

UFC has more proof its not a monopoly & loses an expensive boring wrestler that would never win a title.
Bellator gets a big name
Phil Davis gets some spotlight he would have never got in UFC

If he gets paid more than in the UFC, how much coudl Bellator be paying him?

Honestly, Davis has a pretty clear ceiling. I'd be more intrigued by him vs. Newton and McGeary than him continuing his pattern of boring L & P wins over everyone who can't stop his takedowns and losses to the ones who can't.

Yup, even on his twitter profile he added "Bellator fighter" to the description...not a huge loss for the UFC, plus we'll get to see him merk some Bellator guys with sweet submissions.

I'm not so sure that the UFC came in with an competitive offer. My guess is that they low balled him, possibly offering less money this contract to stay.

Apparently Phil Davis isn't the only fighter that wanted to test the waters of free agency.  Bleacher Report (while not the most reliable sports news source) is reporting that Benson Henderson will test free agency when his contract runs out.

^^ Actually, yeah, good points to all, this is good for the fighters, though it's a little bit like taking money over quality.

I guess Davis has finally realized he's never going to be UFC champ and has started following the $$$. Good for him.

I'm happy for Bellator and Davis, he can be a more interesting fighter in Bellator than in the UFC.   for what I hear he was offered a good deal in Bellator

I wonder if anyone else currently on the UFC roster will consider following Davis to Bellator?  As I posted above, apparently Benson will test out free agency; but I highly doubt the UFC will allow one of their top lightweights to leave.

I don't see many if any fighters at lhw in Bellator that can beat Davis. I really hope Davis starts to finish fighters again.

McGeary can most definitely beat Davis, he's got a perfect build and style to frustrate Davis' sad excuse for a striking game standing and threaten with all kinds of **** if/when Davis does take him down.

Not saying McGeary beats Davis, I just think that saying no one in Bellator can beat Davis is a stretch, imo.
