I don't read as much as I should but since he is from Maine I've been a Stephen King fan since I was a kid. I've read almost every novel of his and right now I'm currently enjoying this one...

Thanks poir420!

When michgandolphin mentioned the creation of this thread I was reading A Dance with Dragons (the 4th book in A Song of Ice and Fire), is anyone else currently reading any of the GoT books?

I have never read a Stephan King novel. Seeing how he is one of the most recognizable authors I really should read a book of his. Any suggestions on what book to read first?

I know what not to read by him. Don't read IT (might have book title wrong, the movie titles IT, but forget if the book has a different title).  IT the movie is possibly one of the scariest things ever, but the end of the book/movie ruin it. Sometimes it seems like King puts really unneeded and sometimes very goofy twists.

Now for something that you should read, I would recommend dark tower. I never read the books per-say, but the graphic novels which i did read where awesome. I heard the books are even better according to people I know who have read them. That pretty impressive given how well done I thought the graphic novels where.

I am personally in middle of two books. One is the gardens of the moon by erickson's. It first book in the series which I believe has 7 books total. It very good book, though it a tad overwhelming. He has kinda a sink or swim mentality for his readers.  The other book is The revenge of the iron dwarves by ra Salvatore who my favorite author. The books are just fun reads with great fight scene, though not very challenging reads.

@Franklin880088 thanks I'll give Dark Tower a look when I finish the two books I'm reading now.

@theMMAmessiah you're right, but I consider it to go 1) A Game of Thrones 2) A Clash of Kings 3) A Storm of Swords 4a) A Feast for Crows 4b) A Dance of Dragons, because for the most part AFfC and ADoD take place during the same time period, but are seperated geographically.

Have you read the books messiah?

@Griffy

Barristan a badass aint he?  People who only saw the show I feel don't always get that Barristan is an absolute beast and quite possible still the best fighter on the planet at like 61 years old.  Wish they did not take some of his fight scene away  and give them to other character's in the show,I feel it does him a bit of an injustice to people who have only seen the show. Show still amazing though.

If anyone wants to read a war memoir, might I suggest Ghost have Warm Hands, by Will R. Bird. He was a Canadian who fought during the First World War and most of the memoir talks about how the soldiers felt during their day to day lives and not so much solely focusing on combat - although Bird did see a lot of it. It also has a very interesting part that (I don't want to give away anything, so I'll be vague) discusses Bird's older brother who died during the war some months prior to Bird joining the Army.

@griffy

nice im bit of history buff, so I might check that out. I recently read a friend's father letters from war world 2 and it was pretty interesting.

Ive been trying to find more books on Mad Jack Church Hill, but can't find any. If anyone knows of any good ones, please let me know. That guy is one of the most interesting people ive ever read about. Only man with confirmed bow and arrow kill during the war and carried a broad sword with him and bagpipes at all times.

@Franklin880088, ya Barristan is such a badass. I believe he may fight sometime in the next season, although it is hard to say.

Going from the books, including The World of Ice and Fire, the best fighter was Arthur Dayne - see the Tower of Joy battle.

Going from the show the best fighter would be Sandor Clegane, but only because we never saw Gregor Clegane fight, only duel. Best duelist on the show would be Syrio.

@Franklin880088, ya I love history. Especially military history; I started collecting military items some years ago, mostly from the First and Second World Wars. Ya Jack Churchill was insane, while he never wrote a book his younger brother Thomas Churchill; who served in a commando unit as well during the war, did called, Commando Crusade. I haven't read it, but it is on my list of books to read, he does talk about his brother's experiences during the war.

I admit I haven't read the GOT books, because I don't want to ruin the series for me, I'll wait until the series is finished or at least 2-3 more seasons until I start reading the books.

I read the LOTR books including the Hobbit and The Silmarillion before the movies came out, and I still enjoyed the movies but couldn't stop thinking about all the things they changed and I don't want that to happen to me with GOT

@Griffy

He should have fought like 3 times already, but they been giving his scenes away to other people. Though I think your right that he will be fighting soon.

They never say Arthur Dayne was the best in that battle from what I recall. He also had another legendary warrior with him during the battle. I think the argument can easily be made that Barristan was better. If you look at what they both accomplish against the same opponents, barristans was more impressive and he did it without  a special sword. Though i agree Dayne top 2, based on what has been shown of the two of them I would lean more towards barristan being a better fighter based on his accomplishments and doing so with a normal blade.

Yea, on the show sandor likely is the best based on what has been shown. In the books he likely bottom end of top 10.

@Griffy

That awesome, ive always wanted to start collecting but don't have the funds at the moment. That would be the time period I would like to collect from, that and middle ages, though there not much you can really collect from the middle ages.

Really, I had no idea he had a brother. That is good to know. I need to look that book up. Thanks a lot man, I really appreciate that. I had been trying to find a book that goes into his experiences during the war but have really had very little luck.

@legacy

Yea they changed a lot from the books, especially the last movie. I was little pissed off at how they treated the bear. If he does not do something badass in the extended scenes, I am going to be pissed. I also wish they had Tom in the movie, but it understandable given that he pretty much a god that it be to unrealistic.

@poir, I was once a HUGE Stephen King fan until I finished all of the Dark Tower books.  It scarred me for life and made me super ANGRY at Mr. King.  You too, Mr. @Franyky088088088, although I would be curious to know your opinion of the ending since you are recommending the the books.

Oh, haha, I was editing as you commented @880088.  The books are fantastic some of his best work, I heard that he had been working on them almost his entire life at that time, it's the ending that leaves this MASSIVELY bitter taste....

And, of course, I cannot divulge that ending here.

EDIT:  Also, you are hopping in at the end of the train, I believe.  If I am not mistaken, the graphic novels were meant as an appeasement to the fans of the books that were super ANGRY about the ending.  So I am not positive (Maybe @poir can verify since he has remained a SK fan) but I was under the impression that they are a continuation of the story.  That being said, you may really enjoy the books 'til the very end and in spite of the endings.  If I was to recommend the books, I would say read all of them except the last one.  Or at the very least (the book actually warns you if memory serves) don't read the last chapter.

I never read the last two graphic novels. I still need to, that is really disappointing. Ive read like 10 of them or however many there are and I really liked them. That sad to hear.
