Nate Diaz was making $50K per fight to show with another $50K to win, when he fought Benson Henderson.

Then the UFC dropped him down to $15K per fight to show and another $15K to win.

That means, even if he wins his fights, he receives $70K less per fight.

What should Nate do?  Should he simply fight his best and when his contract runs out, demand his salary be restored to his former $50K or not sign?  That is what I would recommend if I were his manager or agent.

Here is some background a to how and why he got his salary cut.

Nate's manager, Mike Kogan said, "Cause I suck as a manager."

Is the UFC taking unfair advantage of Nate?  Is Nate being screwed financially by the UFC?

If you think he is, up-vote this post.  If you think Nate is not being taken advantage of, down-vote this post.

I don't know the full details behind fighter pay, but I would think the UFC would want to keep around a guy that has the 2nd most of the night bonuses behind Anderson Silva and Joe Lauzon.

His contract was not renegotiated because he said "******." I don't see how that article is relevent. What is relevent is that Kogan and Diaz were happy with a contract that provided a front-end payment and a ****** 15k/15k per fight, they were happy with it when they signed it or else why would they agree to it? but then tried to renegotiate it when the UFC tried to matchup Nate vs Khabib. Kogan said Nate never turned down the fight, but IMO that is indeed turning it down when you say you will only accept the fight if your demands are met. Nate Diaz screwed himself.

Diaz should be pissed at his manager, not the UFC. He didn't have to sign the contract they wrote up. He could have gone to other promotions, gotten counter offers, etc.

Yeah, it is dumb as hell to sign for 15k with his status. But, it's equally shady to offer it. I'm sure more fighters will read and maybe actually think about what they are signing up for going forward.

I think Cesar Gracie was Nate's manager at the time when his current contract was negotiated. Mike Kogan only came into the picture recently.

It's a crappy contract because money is the greatest incentive you can offer a prize fighter. So if you pay the fighter the majority upfront then you can hurt their motivation.

Just curious since I got 2 down votes...do you guys just dislike Diaz that much that you don't think he should be in the UFC? He always seems to put on entertaining fights, there is plenty of guys in the UFC I don't really care for but still like to watch them fight and wouldn't want to see them go elsewhere.

Or is it just that he should be quiet and happy with what his pay is?

Yeah it's completely understandable why people don't like him because of the **** he does/says. As an example though I don't like Bisping and he has annoyed me numerous times, but I still think he deserves to be in the UFC and I enjoy watching him fight.

I was just saying I think the UFC should try to keep him around basically but if he is going to be a pain in the ass about the pay and they can't come to an agreement I guess it's time to move on. I just was hoping the UFC would try to work with him a little bit.

I suspect that when Diaz used the slur, '******', the UFC over-reacted.  When they threatened to cut him, I suspect Diaz felt coerced into signing anything to stay in the UFC.  Big mistake.  He should have threatened to walk away.

To screw him in the salary department was cheap, shady and says just how far the UFC will go to control people.

Next contract time, Nate simply must demand his former salary be restored or he must walk away. I'm not a huge Nate fan, but I do normally support underdogs, and in this case, a good man is getting taken advantage of horribly.  This would never happen if MMA had a strong labor union to protect fighter rights.

Guys, Nate asked for a lot upfront that's why  contract is 15/15. Nate is rumored to be facing TJ Grant next.

@poir I love Nate Diaz. He is one of a handful of fighters my wife can name, he is a draw for sure. But yeah it's been said a few times now that he got a large amount of money upfront, Kogan tweeted about it when there was outrage about this 15/15 many many months ago. This **** is so dead horse that there isn't even a corpse left to beat, its ******* bone dust. Bill will not let it go, I think he is getting a % of Diaz' pay. Bill, don't sign such a ****** contract next time man your fighter is getting screwed.

@Poir, he definitely deserves to be in the UFC. But as you said, I am just not a big fan of his outside the cage. He is a great fighter and very entertaining, but he could probably make even more money if he just made himself more marketable. I.E. Stop using slurs and being the "bad boy" all the time. Sponsors are willing to throw money at fighters, just the right ones for their image.

Here's what I think.

The UFC knows that the Diaz's aren't the most...greedy fighters. And I think they take advantage of that. Neither Diaz has ever really complained about pay. I don't want to say that they're too dumb to realize that, because that's not true. But I don't think money is their primary concern and I feel the UFC would take advantage of that.

That being said, Nick Diaz got paid 200K each for his last 2 UFC fights. But most will argue that Nick is worth much more than Nate.
