http://www.mmaweekly.com/ufc-restructures-fighter-performance-bonuses-does-away-with-ko-and-sub-of-the-night

I like the idea of the performance of the night maybe some fighters will put forth more effort to put on a better performance.

So it seems that this is going to replace Sub and KO of the night then. I think this is a better motivator for the fighters since some have said that they were shooting for one of those bonuses and that may have had a negative impact on their overall performance. Also, there have been a lot of cards that haven't had any subs or only one so this ensures that the bonus is used and goes to someone deserving.

I think this is a great improvement of the earlier bonusses.

Fighters will be more motivated to do a great job, and I think this will increase number of exciting fights, even though the money shouldn't be a factor in the fighters performances.

I hope the bookmakers will have performance of the night awards betting line aswell, instead of just "Fight of the night"

Great finishes should still dominate this category but it's good because it gives them an out if the only KO is a Mir/CroCop type.

How is a good perfomance quantified? I mean we know Dana hates lay and pray wrestlers but that's a strategy and a style that can often work despite being boring, i.e. even though the perfomance was boring it was still a good performance

While I agree with what your saying about the lay and pray may be a good performance , I dont think we will see any of that getting a bonus. It will be for more exciting performances and as said above I still think KO and Sub will will win alot of these awards it gives them an out on the events where there may not be a ko or sub or maybe the only ko or sub isn't that great.

The more exciting and "go for broke" a fighter fights, the more popular they are with the fans. The more popular they are with the fans, the more people watch them. The more people that watch, the more money the UFC brings in. It makes sense that they would reward the fighters that are going to draw in the most fans. Although lay and pray may be a good way to win, it doesn't further the sport any.

This is ok I guess. I did love the KOTN SOTN awards though. An no I definitely don't think the performance of the night should be awarded to any lay n prayers, what the **** you thinkin man?

Another step down, in the wrong direction.

So, Dana and the Fertittas have found another way to reward 'excitement' and stand-up striking guys at the expense of the submission / ground fighters.  Finishes will now get direct cash rewards.

Just another step towards entertainment and away from sports legitimacy.

Why don't they just come out of the closet and ban wrestling now, instead of searching for ways to discourage it over the long term?

Sure, that would be an outrageous controversy for the next 12 months, but after weathering the storm, everyone here would be snugly on-board and content.  Sacrificing the ground game is something most here can and would stomach without much discomfort.

And fans like me and some others could then fall away from the death of the original MMA.

I don't think takedowns, clinching and grappling  ever be taken out of MMA but man does the UFC like advertising punches over anything....even kicks, knees and.elbows let alone all the takedowns, ground and pound, sweeps, escapes, attempts and submissions.

The problem is guys running the UFC known nothing.about the martial arts and.mixed.martial arts, Dana and Fertittas are just business men,  I don't believe they are passionate about the sport just about money and power.....The Sheik probably knows more being from Abu Dubai.

Always so much paranoid conspiracy theory Burgess. I don't think they are going to ban wrestling and I bet some of the recipients of this award will earn it with impressive grappling performances even. And assuming that the rest of us are just idiots who couldn't possibly appreciate grappling while you are the only intelligent, real mma fan is a little *****.

@ED209  *****?  Really?

Well, this is the organization that kicked out 2(!) Top 10 grinders!  One of them had won 3 of his last 4 fights, including wins over Alan Belcher and Hector Lombard!!!

And would have been a magnificent asset in assisting them to open up the Asian Market!  But just as soon as he lost a fight, and to highly-regarded Jacasre Souza, they kicked him out like a bum on a losing streak???

Paranoid?  Conspiracy theory?  And they have already banned 12-6 strikes from the ground.

And so now they don't have to pay for submissions anymore.  And I'm not seeing the direction clearly?

I think you're blind.  Willfully, willingly blind.

Wow!  I was waiting for Bill to post but I guess I was way off. Bill, I thought you would consider this an improvement because you're the one always going on about how a war shows so much more than a finish. I guess there's no pleasing you. Btw you are starting to sound like a conspiracy theorist.

I'm going to stop discussing anymore.  I'll just post my opinions, and not respond to comments.

It just isn't worth it anymore.  Too much snide rudeness.

It's your approach. You come off rude and argumentative in your posts and you are always out raged crusading against something while accusing the rest of us of being idiots. You never really just discuss things, you ***** and argue then act offended when people respond.

Bill is on the right track. Your average fan like standup fights and boo anything on the ground, FOTN is almost always awarded to a fight that mostly remains standing. Just watch 9/10 times it will be sloppy brawls that win these bonuses, little technique, just winging punches.
