@ C_Arnoud. It could be that he was fighting that way because there is only a small chance that Hunt would've taken him down.

I agree with you though, it is not the smartest way to fight, especially at this level of competition.

I agree with amp Ithink JDS was  way more worried about Hunt´s power than his TD´s and since Hunt has a short reach it was just easier for JDS to just back pedal. but when he fought Cain he was uisng lateral movement to get away from him

"Cain's standup isn't "great." But the whole point is, it doesn't have to be. The threat of the TD makes him difficult to attack, just like GSP. There are several fighters that would annihilate Cain in a kickboxing match, but the threat of the TD changes the game. GSP is the most effective striker at 170 because every single opponent is more worried about him shooting for the TD than KOing them. Cain presents a similar problem. Cain's standup has to be serviceable, not good, to win almost all of his fights. Even if JDS can keep it on the feet, if he's spending the whole time keeping his hands low (which he does in all of his fights because his striking defense sucks) to stop the TD, it's not gonna matter that he's keeping it standing."

It's actually damn good.(specifically for a HW but could still easily hold his own at lighter classes) he puts combinations together much better then JDS who is constantly just throwing one shot at a time and trying to set up one big strike and then flurry if they survive or just swarm from the get go.

Cains biggest problem is that he is a stereotypical mexican fighter in that he wants to exchange with fighters. Kongo and Brock were both tagging him because of that but he seems to have abandoned it and gone with a more controlled aggression with some respectable counter punching.

@legacyofmisfortune rewatched the heartbreaking second fight, and Junior backpedaled in a straight line every time Cain pressured him =/

@AllHailKrull Come on dude, you know Junior's offensive boxing is better than Velasquez's.

Absolutely but it's from athleticism more so then technique. not to say he;s severely lacking in that department because he certainly isn't but he also isn't the gold standard for Boxing in MMA like his fans like to pretend.

Junior Dos Santos' boxing IS arguably the gold standard for boxing in MMA. Why not?

If every person in the UFC was the same height and weighed the same amount and was put in a boxing match, JDS, Anderson Silva, Ross Pearson, BJ Penn and Frankie Edgar would be my top five, in no particular order.

He's definitely great but that's based on pure offense. he gets walked down too easily with virtually no counter striking game. he has to get away and reset to attack.

He adjusts when he can get off though. both Cain and Hunt were countering JDS with his step in straights but then he switched to the overhand and nailed them. he tagged Hunt about 2 to 3 more times with that overhand and each time Hunt was trying to counter with the left hook and it was going straight over.
Mir was slipping the straights so he switched to a chopping right and made him dance.

But then again a ridiculous offensive game can be all you need sometimes and it's obviously paying off in spades for him so i guess i can't really argue he isn't one of the premier boxers in the sport.

@legacyofmisfortune

He did try to circle Velasquez, but he was clearly struggling in doing so >.<

He did circle a little bit, but pressure showed that his instincts still tell him to back away in a straight line...

It isn't a given that he will do that in the rerematch, tho.
