seeing Jake Shields knocked out in the first round?  Not to take anything away from Ellenberger who I think is the dark horse of the division but since being in the UFC the most impressive thing Jake Shields has done was to win a couple of rounds against GSP, who put in one of the worst performances of his career.

GSP is currently working like mad on his takedowns and position game

I don't think GSP cares. He beat Shields now it's on to Condit. How Shields loses to another guy I'm sure is not something GSP even gives a thought to.

I was waiting for this to be brought up. How well do you think Ellenberger would fare against a P4P fighter Georges? He may well have TKO'd Jake but doesn't mean he's well rounded enough to hang with the top tier fighters. Even though I agree and think he's the dark horse of the division doesn't mean just one performance defines his career or means he fights more impressively than George St.Pierre.
This subject could be brought up about a lot of fighters. Georges is just brought up because he's an easy target.

@BodyModifier I agree that a single performance doesn't define a fighter and styles always make fights.  I also agree with GSP being an easy target but I feel like he has really made himself that target by saying he is going to pressure and finish his opponent.

I agree with BodyModifier and p4pgoat. I think Ellenberger has proven to be the darkhorse of the WW division, but one great perfomance against a Jake Shields coming off of a loss, and the death of his father doesn't define his career. It definitely puts Ellenberger on the map, and makes us all take notice of him, but at this point, I still don't think that he would beat GSP. I think Ellenberger should fight Jon Fitch next. Let's see who the real #1 contender really is for the UFC WW title. GSP hasn't faced a true #1 contender since Jon Fitch. To the best, you have to beat the best. GSP is the best WW in the world, and with tonight's performance, Jon Fitch is easily #2. Ellenberger has to beat Jon Fitch in as convincing fashion as he did Shields tonight before I would give him a serious shot of beating GSP at this point in his career.

I think Ellenberger still needs a couple more wins before he fights GSP but I do think in the future he will be someone to give GSP a war.

@jaykool

HELL TO THE YEAH

I hope jake not only beats fitch, but puts his boring ass into a coma. I also see him to be yet another guy to dethrone GSP. The competition is intense this year, its all about ellenberger, Condit, Diaz, Eric silva,  Rory Macdonald, Ebersole etc. 2011 FTW

Jon Fitch does sound like a great option, it would be a good test to see how Jake would deal with relentless take downs and constant pressure from a superior grappler.  Although Fitch can't mimic GSP's striking or athleticism I think if a fighter could stop his take downs and beat Jon they could be an interesting fight for GSP.  Also I never intended for this to be a Jake will beat GSP thread but seeing a great finish like that just reminded me of GSP talking about finishing opponents then jabbing for 25 minutes.

You need to realize that when Shields fought GSP Shields never let his hands go like he did tonight. Shields kept his hands up defending himself most of the fight with Georges. There has to be an oppurtunity for a KO. Trust me if Shields would have attacked GSP with his hands down like he did Ellenberger GSP would have finished him as well.

Not to make any excuses for Shields, but I'm sure it's been a tough few weeks for him and his head may not have been in the fight 100%.  I give props to Ellenberger for the win.

LOL! It must be absolutely exhausting to be a GSP fan.

If I had to come up with that many excuses for his lack of finishing ability, I'd just give up.

GSP doesn't care what other fighters do.

What I pulled away from this fight is how damn impressive Carlos Rocha's performance was against Ellenberger. Can't wait to see that kid back in action.

And I think Fitch-Hendricks winner or Diaz-Penn winner should be next on Ellenberger's hitlist.

I agree with Danno, GSP does his own thing.  He barely trash talks, he's a very classy athlete.  As long as he keeps winning why should he care what Jake Ellenberger does, it's a tough division.  Not to mention he's fighting Carlos Condit, who holds a decision victory over Ellenberger.  I know that if I was GSP, I would be a little concerned that all these killers are coming up in the division.

I think Diego Sanchez is overrated, I doubt he will fight for the WW title in the near future, I'd place MacDonald, Diaz, and Ellenberger ahead of him in that division.  Plus he barely won the fight against Martin Kampmann.
