What happened to them. I don't really know if they helped strikers or grapplers more. Do you think they should be brought back?

nope, they helped wrestlers. gave them more well... traction basically. meaning they dont slip on the mat. makes takedowns easier.

They also helped BJJ guys with leg locks.

Does anyone recall shoes being the reason for a cut?

I don't remember a shoe ever causing a cut, but once Zoila Frausto threw a high hick and her toenail opened up a big cut on her opponent's face.  I think it might have been this fight:

I remember that... Finger nails have caused cuts too, but I don't recall shoes ever doing so.  But yeah, they did give wrestlers an advantage and BJJ guys too, but mainly wrestlers.

I just ordered the first 4 IVC events, I wonder if I'll see any shoes.  I know I won't be seeing any gloves!

@Rascal, you're right about that, although Vitor wore shoes back in the day.  He's not in those tournaments although Dan Severn is in the first one, so I guess that answers my question.

Okay, I haven't been into MMA that long. But checking out the older fights I was curious. Thanks.

They've been worn in recent fights (08-09), IIRC. Think Lawal wore them before Strikeforce, although that was in Japan. Maybe against Kerr too, which was also probably a non-Unified Rules fight.

I know the UFC banned the use of shoes... any org that uses the unified rules do not allow shoes anymore for safety reasons (kicks/etc).
