In Episode 1 elimination rounds, McKinney faced Charley Lynch. In an exciting one round fight, McKinney broke Lynch's nose a brutal matter. Impressing Dana White and both coaches. White had this to say about Lynch's broken nose, "In all the years I've been in the fight business, I don't think I have ever seen a broken nose that nasty". Shortly after breaking Lynch's nose, McKinney rocked him and eventually won via TKO at 4:05 in Round 1.
In Episode 2, McKinney was drafted in Round 6 onto Team Ortiz. Ortiz got the first pick, so Liddell picked McKinney to fight Kyle Noke. In an uneventful fight, Noke finished McKinney in the first round at 2:44 via triangle choke.
In Episode 5, McKinney found out that his eligibility for the wildcard position was over when what he originally thought to be a bruised jaw turned out to be a ripped off labrum ligament.
